Driving after csection?

With my first 4 years ago, I had a csection but wasn't driving so I don't remember (or if I was even told...)

How long after a csection can you drive?
MIL and daughter are coming out about 2 weeks after, we won't all be able to fit in one car for little outtings but we do have 2 cars. Just curious if I'll be well enough to drive myself or if she will be taking my car.

Re: Driving after csection?

  • I could be 100% wrong, but I *think* it is when you are off pain meds.

  • They told me 3 weeks with my last one. But that 7years ago.

  • When you're off your pain meds. Which is usually a week. But if you can, they recommend two weeks. If you suddenly have to slam on the breaks for some reason, it can hurt like a bitch. You'd be surprised at what all you use your core muscles for. I was fine driving around town after a week though.
  • Mine was four weeks, but I was off pain meds at two weeks. Each doctor may be different. I didn't have any complications unless he was being overly cautious because I also had surgery while pregnant before the c-section.

I can't remember either but I feel like it was closer to 4 weeks as well...simply because you just had serious surgery, not just because of pain meds.

  • I had vaginal delivery (I dont think the driving time table is that different) but, I was told by my hospital that my car insurance was not liable and wouldn't cover an accident within 2 weeks.

Interesting. I had a vaginal delivery (no complications) and wasn't told anything about no driving.
  • My guess is you probably won't want to take a newborn a lot of public places before you are able to drive anyway.

  • 14 days was what i was told for the first 2 and my 3rd as well  :) Unfortunately this wont be possible this time around for me, so I will be driving day 10...unless I get some family help, but i doubt it!

  • @ordinary1 were you on any pain meds? I was on percocet. My script was 2 weeks so my guess is that's why they said it. I didn't take it the whole time. My guess is they were trying to waive any form of liability themselves if I decided to do something stupid.

I actually needed a lot of rides that first week since my son needed to go to the hospital twice for bilirubin tests (jaundice) and lactation consultant appts since he wasn't latching well.

  • I had minor tearing so no pain meds.

I agree with needing to be out the first week. I had three or four days for bilirubin, a weight gain check, going to the ER. You never know why you may need to go out.
  • That makes sense. I had some pretty significant tearing, hence the meds. I rememeber *right* after the nurse was like all snotty and would only give me ibuprofen - I was incredulous. Then another nurse who didn't have something up her butt came in and was visibly perturbed that the other nurse acted this way.

  • I had my first check-up with the OB at 2w PP... I was told no driving until she cleared me at that appointment. Hoping for a VBAC this time but it will be very difficult for me to not drive for 2 weeks with my older boys in preschool.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • In mid 2012 the time frame recommended to me by my doctor was 4 weeks. Also, as pp's have mentioned, you should also be off of your pain meds.

  • Thanks everyone :) everyone has valid points... Being off pain meds and knowing how my body is recovering will be a huge factor.

Not planning on doing much travelling with a newborn but good information to know just in case!

Wait, what? Your car insurance won't cover accidents just because you recently delivered? I need more information about this, because it sounds sketchy on the surface, but I could be missing something.

  • @wintersong139 the hospital told me that because I was prescribed percocet upon discharge. I think it was a liability thing on the hospitals part.. I have no idea if it's true or not. I did have to sign something saying they explained it to me though.

Ultimately it was part of my discharge orders not to drive for 2 weeks. I think if I went against that and the insurance found out, they might not have to pay?

Ahha! Now that makes sense. Like driving under the influence--an obviously risky behavior that is going to make it so your insurance is not liable.

  • My insurance company won't cover me until 6 weeks. Tbh after my first c-section I don't think I could of thought about driving for at least a month.
  • After my csec I was told 2 weeks. I was also told that after my most recent birth (I have vbac'd my subsequent babies). Pretty glad my midwives were firm on that point, as I passed a large clot/almost passed out a day or two after I got home from the hospital. What if I'd been driving? I definitely enlisted help to get to the baby's first couple of appointments after that.
  • I was told 2 weeks after both of mine.
