  Do they have any passport protectors/holders? For our trip to Europe last year, my inlaws got us passport covers that prevent thieves from using scanners to steal our identity (didn't even know that was possible, but apparently it's a thing). If they are the sentimental type, maybe a travel journal or something along those lines.

  I was also going to suggest a Rick Steve's Travel book or DVd.

  I am a dirty lurker but I am a travel junkie. Although I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rick Steves, don't buy his books unless your parents aren't tech savvy. You can download so much of his stuff onto your device and have self-guided tours for free. We used these tours at most of the major tourist attractions thru Rome and Florence. He is wonderful.
  
  Now to the helpful part...check out travelsmith.com for some neat travel gear in all price ranges. You could also do a gift card to an airline for future travel. Delorme has cool maps and GPS gear if they are into that sort of thing. Hope that helps.

  If they carry music via mp3s (phone, iPod, etc.), you might consider this little Scosche PMSBK boomCAN 3.5mm Aux Portable speaker so they can listen together in their hotel room (or wherever).
