6 mo surgery- clear liquids?

So my son will be having surgery - minor corrective ear- on the 26th... They told me no solids after midnight and nothing but clear liquids up till 4 hrs before surgery. The surgery is expected to be at 1:45 pm unfortunately and I'm going to have what I expect to be a very cranky baby... My question is, does anyone know what would be acceptable for a 6 mo old to have as far as clear liquids go? Water obviously. Pedialyte???

  • Ask your doc.

In general it means just things like water andapple juice

  • I already had my pre-op appointment with the surgeon, and they mailed me some info, but it doesn't include any ideas for what he can have. It was schedualed at such a terrible time because that's all they had available until next year and with our insurance I needed to get in before Dec. 1. They said they will call me 1 day prior to surgery to confirm time and all the details... I'm just trying to get a head start and buy some things for him while I can.... Thanks for the suggestions!
  • For DS's surgery at 3.5 months, it was pedialyte. I hope you get an earlier time. Luckily, our surgeon changed the time the morning of and DS was first.

  • For my DS's surgery at 3mos breast milk and formula were included in the clear liquids. BM was 4hrs prior and formula was 5hrs.

  • My son had surgery about a month ago and they told me the same thing. They recommended water, pedialyte, and apple juice. We gave him a bottle at the last possible minute (he was able to have formula 8 hours before, so we woke up in the middle of the night to feed him). Then we gave him 2 bottles of water in between. He wasn't cranky at all. I was really nervous too, but I think the water helped to fill his belly.

  • DD1 was allowed breastmilk before her eye surgery at 8month old. You need to call your doctor to clarify.

  • Definitely call, but my DS had surgery 2 weeks ago and it was water, pedialyte, or apple juice. He was also scheduled for much earlier since they give babies priority. As another person posted, we woke him up to have a bottle before the cutoff. I think that really helped.
