Is Phoenix really that bad?!

My husband wants to name our little girl Charlotte Elisabeth, Charlie for short. I think it is too common and LOVE the name Phoenix Scarlett. I love unique names and I love the meaning to the name Phoenix. I had a tubal reversal and Phoenix means " to rise from the ashes". Anyhoo, I posted this in the February 15 board and oh man it got ugly fast! Figured I would give it a go over here where some of you ladies are a little more open minded.

We are naming our LO Charlotte Marie and using Carly as a NN rather then Charlie if extended family want to use one.
  • Phoenix is really bad.  Like roll my eyes and feel sorry for your LO.  I'd rather be 1 of 15 Charlotte's I know than the only Phoenix.
  • I don't mind Pheonix as a middle name, not as a first name, sorry.  I agree with the suggestion of Scarlett Pheonix.

Really dislike Phoenix as a first name, but it could be a good middle name- Elizabeth Phoenix or Scarlett Elizabeth are better options.

Eta: Agree with other poster that Scarlett Phoenix makes me think "Red Bird" and Charlotte Phoenix sounds like a route between two cities.
  • I was iffy when I thought this post was about a boy name, but Phoenix on a girl? It's pretty awful.

I think Charlotte or Scarlett Elisabeth is a million times better. Seriously.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • I was going to say I don't think it's horrible and actually kind of a gp name for me.  Then I saw you were talking about a girl.  I think it would be horrible on a girl.  Charlotte is the clear winner between the two.

  • Charlotte is a nice name but it's pretty popular and kind of boring. Scarlett is also a lovely name, less common but it's trendy. Phoenix is very cool and not at all boring, but it might be too much as a first name, as a middle name though it does add some pizzaz.

Scarlett Phoenix or Elisabeth Phoenix are my votes, I am just Charlotte-d out.
  • If Phoenix is important to you, I would use it as a middle name.  I don't really like it as a first name.
  • If you have to ask "is it really that bad?" then part of you at least admits that IT IS BAD. I can't think of any redeeming qualities of Phoenix for a girl. But if you truly love it, consider it for the middle name slot.

I agree Charlotte is popular. I like Scarlet Elisabeth, or perhaps Elisabeth as a first name. For Charlotte I really love Lottie as a nickname!

  • Phoenix as a mn might work, but I hear Scarlett Phoenix as "red bird" and Charlotte Phoenix as two cities...

Elizabeth Phoenix or Scarlett Elizabeth, maybe?

My niece is Phoenix, well actually, Phenix. I didn't like it at first but now I couldn't imagine her any other name and like it more BC I think of her!! People will love it once she's here, if you choose to use it!
  • I think Scarlett Phoenix is pretty.

I live in Phoenix. I don't know why you'd want to name your child after a place that gets to 122 degrees in the summer. All I think of with Phoenix is sweating and being hot. Not what is want associated with my name.

This exactly. I live in Phoenix and don't have too much positive to say about it. Just not a nice name for a little girl in my opinion.

  • I really don't like Pheonix at all, but I also don't like Charlie for a little girl. As the first PP said, I think Scarlett Elisabeth is very pretty and you get the best of both worlds!

  • It's really that bad. I don't like names after places even if it's a mythological figure too.
  • Phoenix sounds trashy.  It's really bad.
  • I second (or something) Scarlett Elisabeth. I totally get where you're coming from on the story of the Phoenix because I love it too!! If it was for a boy I'd be all for it.

I want to like Phoenix, I see no reason not to like it until I start thinking about actually using it. Boy or girl if you must use it please MN it. Otherwise look for a name that means the sand thing.

FWIW I feel like my DD middle name has a similar meaning ( Persephone) and is more common and acceptable as a name ( preferably a middle name as well though, but could be a FN if you are really dead seton it).

  • Also, please don't go with Scarlett Phoenix, it sounds like a superhero, or that you're describing the color of a Phoenix. Charlotte/Scarlett Elisabeth or Elisabeth Charlotte/Scarlett are much nicer.

  • I agree with Scarlett Elizabeth. I think it's really pretty and rolls off the tongue better than your original names. I'm not really against the name Phoenix and I like your reason for choosing it but I don't like it with Scarlett as a middle name. I think you need a middle name that compliments it more.
  • I actually like the name Phoenix for a girl but Scarlett seems too feminine to be used with it. I like the meaning too so consider Phoenix as a MN if you disqual as a first!

  • Horrible for a girl. Horrible as a name for a human. If you must, put in the middle name spot.

    I love Charlotte.

  • For Charlotte I really love Lottie as a nickname!
Lottie reminds me of the foulmouthed trash on Gypsy Sisters (I think there's 2 Lotties on that show). Great guilty pleasure, not who I'd want people associating my daughter with!

I love the idea and meaning behind Phoenix, but I don't think anyone would ever taker her or you seriously with that name. I would fully support you if you wanted a Phoenix tattoo or something!

  • I don't love the name, but I don't need to, it's your baby.

It's tough when there is a name you love and it gets a bad reaction from others but everyone is entitled to their opinions.  Having said that, keep the resume and college application test in your mind.
First impressions do make an impact on how people initially react or respond to somebody.

If you're set on a name with meaning, what about Renee?  It literally means re-born in French.  Renee Scarlett is quite pretty in my opinion.
    Ooh ooh, I vote this!

I won't be insulting promise lol especially since you said it got ugly last time but not so much a fan of Phoenix. I like the first suggestion someone made which is Scarlet to keep it unique. I think Ruby is really sweet too. Good Luck

  • A friend of mine went in to labor, in Queens, at 1:30 pm on Sept 11 2001. She was pushing out a baby while the city was falling around her and all of the medical staff were distracted, crying, and crazed. It was a boy and she named him Phoenix and everyone who heard it that day cried and just wanted to stare at him and forget the world, even total strangers. I'll always have a very special place in my heart for that name.

... But I don't know about it for a girl. I'd use it as a MN with something other than Scarlett. Elizabeth Phoenix perhaps.
