Another breastfeeding question

Hi ladies! I'm sure this question has been asked before but I'm 3 days postpartum so please forgive me for being a bit too tired to search back.

We just got home today and this is our first night home. In our breastfeeding class they said to feed every 2 to 3 hours over the course of 24 hours which is what I have been doing but today we met a lactation consultant who said to do that during the day and that breastfeeding babies only need at least one feed from midnight to 6 am. That doesn't seem enough to me but I'm a newbie so wondering what you have been doing. My milk still hasn't come in and hopefully will soon. Thanks so much as always!

Re: Another breastfeeding question

  • Every 2 during the day then every 3 at night. LO gained back to birth weight at 2 weeks and I was expecting the peds to say feed on demand but she said to feed every 1.5 hours. Which doesn't make since because now I will be feeding her more often. Im feeding on demand now.

I would feed every 2-3 hours until your weight check in or call the peds in the morning for a second opinion.

  • Ditto everyone else - every 2-3 hours during the day, 3-4 hours during the night, until LO is back to birthweight. Then feed on demand.

  • I was always told to feed when the baby wanted to feed.  DS #1 was up every 3ish hours day or night to feed, DS #2 only got up once to eat at night.  He'd eat around 9 or 10 and then wake to eat around 3 and back until 6 or 7 in the morning.  Each baby is different but I wouldn't wake a baby to feed them unless they were very small and needed to gain weight per dr orders.
  • Wouldnt one time between 12 and 6 just be a weird way of saying every three hours?

  • I saw my pediatrician yesterday and she said every two hours during the day..wake them up and get them very stimulates before feeding during the day to get their days/nights on track. At night, feed every 3 hours and don't make a big fuss out of it. Leave the lights dimmed, feed and burp and put back into the bassinet.
