Baby monitor with skype or similar?

So I know there have been other discussions about baby monitors, but I am looking for one that has specific features and want to know what your recommendations are.

I am hoping for a good baby camera that has a dedicated monitor with it but that I can also access from my phone or computer. DH will be on deployment and I am hoping for somethinthat he can log into, but I don't want to have to use my phone or computer at home, hense the desire for a included monitor.

Has anyone used anything like this?? Recommendations?? TYIA!

  • Be careful of those though. There have been cases of people hacking into them and spying and even yelling at the baby. Though I completely understand why you want one! Just letting you know in case you hear or experience anything weird.

  • That is super creepy! I will have to look into this! Thanks!
  • Dropcam also has wireless streaming, but again...no separate monitor because it's assumed your phone/tablet becomes the monitor.

Also, the hacking isn't really an issue if you lock down both your router and the device itself.  That means changing passwords from default settings.

  • We bought the Dropcam Pro. Make sure your WIFI is password protected and your camera is as well. We have only used to see what the dog does during the day - I still need to figure out settings to make sure the sound comes through when baby wakes up. So we are learning how to use it but it's great. We chose that because my mom (whole family)  lives in Brasil so we want them to be able to "see" the baby when they want.
  • I went through the same exercise of trying to find what you are looking for. The tough part is a WIFI enabled one that also ha a physical monitor piece. There is one by Summer Infant that does (check at Buy Buy Baby); we initially registered for that one since it had the monitor but it had really bad reviews when I researched it. We ended up registering for the Withings Smart Baby and plan to use my husband's old iPhone as the dedicated "monitor" at home. I can't speak for it yet because baby isn't here, but we are happy with the functions it offers, just hoping it delivers on them!

  • Grandparents and sibs are far away, so I like the idea... but my DH says we would need a monitor, his phone screen is too small and his data package is limited... downside, usually can only put like 4 users on the ones we shopped/compared.

  • We got a foscam, and despite some inital hiccups setting it up, are pretty happy with it.  We dont have an extra monitor with it, but we can use our phones, tablets and PCs to look any time, and all 3 of those have bigger screens than most monitors.

We used it to check on... and talk to ... o ur dogs while we were gone to anaheim earlier this month

  • @Bigboneded - if you are using it at home you will be streaming via wifi - your data plan is not used then.
  • I got this one https://www.target.com/p/summer-infant-baby-zoom-wi-fi-2-5-color-video-baby-monitor/-/A-14714005#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=Summer+Infant+Baby+Zoom+Wi-Fi+2.5%22+Color+Video+Bab

I haven't tried it out yet, and it got mixed reviews, but most of them seemed to center around people not being tech savvy or having a slow internet connection to begin with. I decided to take the chance because I didn't like the thought of having to put my own system together like some of the other options out there.

This is one of the ones I saw yesterday when I was at the store. I was worried about the mixed reviews, but it looks like it might have everything we want!
