February 2013 Moms

I know you guys will know....

Best wrap for wearing baby in those first few months?  I need something that is idiot proof for putting on myself. I am looking at the K'Tan, the BOBA, Tula and gypsey mama. Any preferences? WIll take pros and cons...but really ease of putting it on alone while holding the baby and fighting a toddler at my feet is number 1. I have an Ergo that i love for when they are a little bit bigger.

Re: I know you guys will know....

  • The only carrier I've ever used is the K'tan. I think it's very easy to use while holding the baby- there's no wrapping involved. The only thing I don't like is that it hurts my back, but I seem to be pretty sensitive to that sort of thing- my back is often achy.

  • I am also a big K'tan fan, but in all fairness I've not used anything else except the ergo which I still use for lob her walks because like Kleigh, the K'tan can hurt my back after it's been on a while, but I also have preexisting back injury so I don't blame the carrier. It's easy to get on while holding babe and fighting off a toddler and I also find it very easy to nurse in while I'm getting lunch ready for L or even cleaning and changing her diaper etc...

  • No personal experience. But a friend of mine loves her K'tan.
  • I had a moby with my preemie and it worked but was kind meh to put on.  I tried it with my 9 lb newborn who was probably 10 lbs when I tried and he was already kind of heavy.  We went right to the soft structured Beco and it was easier.  Guess it depends on how big you expect...
  • I loved my k'tan but I would actually recommend a ring sling. They can be used for newborn babies and toddlers. The k'tan will only last for a few more months at this point but I still use my ring sling all the time (daily at least) with my 20 month old.
  • My question is what wrap/carrier works best for a bigger woman? My ergo barely fits and is uncomfortable because of it.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE my Tula.  I didn't get the infant insert, just rolled an A&A swaddle blanket and used it like a "bench" under her butt.  I call it my instant-sleep-machine. :D  Those first few weeks when we were struggling with reflux, before the meds kicked in and really seamed to work, I literally slept sitting up on the couch, with A in the Tula, because I was afraid I'd drop her if I just tried to hold her.

And for the record, I threw E on my back in the Tula the other day when I was trying to make dinner and he was driving me bonkers.  Totally comfortable and awesome.

** I've never tried a ring sling or a maya.  I did borrow a friend's rainbow woven wrap, but it wasn't the right size for me so it was really hard to use (she's itty tiny, and I'm NOT).  I have also used the Moby, and actually like using for A right now when I can get her to settle in it, but A doesn't seem to like it as much.  The Tula is my miracle.
