How big of a home is necessary

Hi Ladies!
My husband and I are trying to decide whether or not to stay in our current house or buy a different one. It is 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, with a large kitchen and two living room areas. It is about 1800 square feet. I love this house, it is in a great school district and near a great park by the water. My husband thinks it's much too small. We are only planning to have 2 kids total so I think it's more than enough space. Perhaps we could organize better to utilize the space better but that is an easy fix in my opinion. Does anyone have similar experiences? How much house do you think is necessary for a family of 4? Will we really be cramped like he thinks or is it plenty of space? Just curious what other people's situations are and if they work or not. Thanks!!

  • 1800 for four people is plenty big until you have two teenagers. DH and I bought big (2300), 4b, 2.5 ba because we had roommates before DS, and now we don't know what to do with all the extra space! It's just more space to heat and cool in Texas weather.

  • From a financial planning perspective I agree 100% with you--a bigger house usually means more stuff, higher utilities, etc. For your situation I would assess whether it's important to you to have an extra bedroom as a guestroom/office/hobby room and whether four people to two bathrooms sounds rough. Any chance of finishing a basement/room for an addition in the future? Moving is such a pain and so expensive. Of course if you want to help the overall economy the answer is move up!
  • We are in a very similarly sized house. We have a little extra space because our garage is somewhat finished....large area of carpet, ac, etc. We will probably use that as somewhat of a playroom as LO grows. Although our home is a moderate size, we have a huge yard front and back and love our neighborhood. Even if we have one or two more babies....we will make the space work because of location!
  • I think it's all personal opinion and what you think is small. I think 1800 sf would be plenty big enough. We bought bigger...3000sf 4 beds 3.5 and there's 3 of us but we have 4 dogs lol. I feel like we needed the space.

  • I want a smaller house, we have 4 bdrm 3.5 bath (around 3-3.5k sq ft) cleaning is awful and the utility bills suck, I'm so ready to downsize. I've even considered moving back to our old townhouse which we are currently renting.
  • We live in an 1800sf 4br, 1.5 bath with 3 little ones, and I think it's plenty big enough (except for our the missing second full bath - I see that being a problem in the teenage years with 2 girls).  The kids all have their own rooms and we have a futon in our living room/playroom for the rare guest.  We may go bigger at some point, but not much....the larger the house, the more there is to clean in my book!

  • we are about 1200 sq ft. 2 bedroom 1 bath with plans for a basement bedroom in the distant future + a kitchen remodel. I love our little house and don't ever plan on moving. I grew up in one of similar size so I am used to it. I think we are cozy. we may eventually have a basement family room too.
