July 2013 Moms

Low grade fever $5.99

Last week, P started running a low grade fever, as in 99.5-99.9 (we use the temporal thermometer, fyi).  We watched it for a few days and called the nurses line at the pedi's office b/c I started to worry about a UTI.  With his urological issues, he's particularly prone to them.  Basically I got the "well technically a fever is 100.4" speech.  They gave me a list of UTI symptoms to watch for, but nothing ever came of it.

Well FF to this week and he's still running the same temp.  It has never been above 99.9, but this is abnormal for him.  The nurse did say that babies/toddlers tend to have higher temps than adults, but this just started.  He is eating and drinking just fine, having the appropriate amount of wet/dirty diapers, and doesn't seem sick at all.  He is sleeping a little longer than usual in the mornings, but not consistently.

What do you think?  Just continue to watch it?  I'm not overly concerned, just more puzzled I guess.  Nothing else has changed that I can think of.

  • @econmama asked what I was going to :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I guess I would say that it's more in the afternoon/evening.

It just started randomly though.  So if it's a time of day thing, why would it change?  It's just odd.
  • @iandloveandyou1 I just noticed your ticker!  Congrats :)
  • I rarely check temps, unless LO is acting tired/lethargic. I have no words of wisdom but I hope nothing comes of it!

  • We do armpit temps, but L's can vary by a whole degree or more (generally 97.3- 98.5) and has hit 99s while teething.

I have heard that the temporal can vary based on how you swipe it. No actual experience. But have you tried cross-checking with a different kind of thermometer?

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!

131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • @KateJuly2013 I only check when he feels hot.  I didn't want you to think I just compulsively check it lol

@gutsymama We haven't tried to cross check b/c quite frankly, he has a meltdown if we try to check under the armpit (pedi visits are fun... he cries more with that than shots!) and I can't imagine how we'd hold him still for a rectal temp check.
  • @KikiCohen‌ haha I don't think you compulsively check temps! I just dont have any help with what low grade temps mean or what to do for them. If LO ever has them, I usually don't know about it.

A poorly worded admission to lacking a frame of reference.

You should always listen to your gut. Before google and nurse help lines, there was mamas instinct.

Lol yeah poor babies apparently the armpit is excruciating. Luke has gotten used to it now, but he used to sleep through heel pricks and wail about having his temp taken....

If you're concerned, it doesn't hurt to call again. Especially when you have a particular issue you are watching for.

  • When in doubt call.

However, he sounds hydrated & comfortable. That would be my primary concern.

Random related question: how do you get a UTI diagnoses? Sample? Do they have to use a catheter on the poor loves? :-??

  • @PrimRoseMama‌ My understanding is that it's just a urine sample. He had to have a catheter for two weeks after his surgery. It was horrible :(
  • I would trust your mom sense If you think something is off its better to get it checked, IMO. But I'm a worrier
  • @lwrightenator‌ I agree. They told us to watch for him crying when he pees and very smelly urine. So far, none of that.
