Extended breastfeding help

My daughter will be 1 on 12/11. I'm not in a hurry to give up breastfeeding, but I would love to wean from the pump. I work full-time and I've struggled to pump enough during the day since she started daycare at 3 months. I always find a way to make it work, even if that means pumping 5 times a day and taking fenugreek. My concern is that I will dry up completely if I go down to just nursing in the morning and before bed. Has anyone had any experience with extended breastfeeding with supply issues?

Re: Extended breastfeding help

  • you should be fine. many people go on to nurse for months or years after they stop pumping at work (see the extended breastfeeding check-in :) ). i stopped pumping at 14 months and am still nursing my 27-month-old DS. if your let your LO nurse on demand while you are at home mornings/evenings/weekends/holidays, that will help to keep your supply up.

  • I struggled with supply issues when I returned to work. After a year of pumping at work I still continued to pump once when I got home. Granted I worked evening shifts. So when I got home, my kid was asleep. But I'm sure if you are a regular 9-5 person you could still manage to do the same. I think I finally gave up that last daily pumping session around 18 months. I wasn't coming home feeling engorged anymore so I didn't find it necessary.

She is still happy nursing a bunch and my supply is even surviving pregnancy and she is going to be 3 in march.

  • If you made it this far, you'll be fine giving up the pumping at work. Very few moms pump past a year (I stopped at14 months and am still BF at 18.5 months). Your supply overall may decrease, but it won't dry up. And, supply isn't really that much of a concern, since they are eating other things. BF is really just supplementing, providing antibodies, and comfort at this point and the amount of milk really is NBD. Congrats on making it to a year!

  • DD will be 13 months on the 24th, and I stopped pumping at work pretty much right after she turned 1. I too was worried that my supply would dry up, but I talked to an LC and she reassured me it would be fine. So far so good! The first week I felt pretty engorged by the afternoon, then after that it has been fine. GL!
  • My DD is turning 1 on 12/9 :)   I agree with PPs that you should be OK. I am gradually dropping from 3 pumps/day to 2 (started that about 2 weeks ago). My output from those 2-3 pumps is now about 6oz which is way less from my peak of 14-16oz a few months ago. She still nurses on demand on weekends and I'm sure my supply isn't what it was, but she still wants to nurse what she can get from me. I suspect that will remain the same once I wean daytime pumps altogether. I also think she's drinking way more from nursing first thing in the morning to make up for the smaller amounts at daycare.

  • Honestly I was ok doing 2-3 nursing sessions a day. But once I dropped to just before bed at 15 mo I quickly dried up
