Chapstick for Infant?

The kid and I are just getting over a cold, and poor guy has such chapped lips. I assume I should not put regular chapstick (lip smackers) on him since he'll basically just eat it....right? Its 20 degrees and I don't want to leave the house....is there something in my house that I can put on his lips to help? I don't have coconut oil or Vaseline.

  • ^wss.  Do you have any regular chapstick, like actual chapstick brand or blistex?  I don't think a very small amount would hurt.

  • I guess I should also ask, when I do go to the store, does anyone know what brand would be good to get? Maybe something like Burt's bees?

  • I use Waxelene for myself as chapstick.  Also, I think the jar says its edible (or maybe that's CJ's?).  But anyway, I would feel safe putting it on an infant.  Also, I have a baby chapstick...I think from Boudreaux's (buttpaste)?  Just look in the baby section and see what they have.  But honestly, I would just stick with Waxelene.  I love that stuff. :)

  • I think some of the CA Baby products say they are edible on the label. Edible, but not necessarily tasty.

I haven't looked at the Burt's Bees baby stuff recently, but when I was recently looking for something similar to Waxelene, I was overwhelmed by the number of ingredients in Burt's Bees products (not necessarily the baby stuff) and not knowing what they all were. I would be surprised if any of their products are food safe.

Waxelene uses high quality ingredients but I'm not sure if they are food-safe, if you are worried about your baby ingesting them. Their FAQ says the product should not be used internally.

CJ's website says they use food-safe ingredients.

Honestly, if you are going to the store and don't want to use Waxelene or CJ's ... just get coconut oil.

  • This is what I use on my LO's lips and faces when they are really chapped or windburned.  It is not greasy (more like consistency of lotion) and it does not sting.
  • Thank you for all the help! I will put some CJs on for now, and will check out all the other options next time I'm at the store.

  • I like the earth mama angel baby nipple butter. I used it for nursing and for chapped cheeks and lips. It's vegan and safe for consumption, plus the texture was nice and absorbed quickly.

  • I have used coconut oil on dd and myself. It worked well.

  • I have been using coconut oil also. Logan's cheeks and chin were chapped and lotion burned. The oil worked well and I didn't have to worry about him getting it in his mouth.

  • I use a cocoa butter stick. Goes on like chapstick & can also be used on cheeks, etc.
