International Travel

So my SIL is getting married in Belize (!!!) in May. LO will be almost 7 months old. Anyone have any experience with international travel at such a young age? I'm planning to ask the doctor at our 2 month visit about feasibility/vaccines/etc. but I was starting to worry that maybe it wouldn't be safe for LO... Hoping someone has done this before!

I went to Turks and Caicos when DD1 was 10.5. There were quite a few small children there and we used a crib provided by the hotel and brought her car seat. I guess my concerns with international travel would be water quality and safety. I also wouldn't go anyplace where you would need special immunizations. Personally I would go to Belize.

ETA - we didn't bring I stroller I wore her in my ergo everywhere.

  • Both my boys traveled around 9 months, one to Aruba and the other to St. Marten. We had no issues and the vacations were great. They slept in the stroller by the pool and it was relaxing! I plan on doing the same with LO. Some items I wouldn't leave home without, stroller, car seat, tent for on the beach, be prepared to buy bottles of water, any stuffed animals and toys LO enjoys and lots of sunscreen!! Sounds like an amazing time!!
Don't forget to apply for LO passport now. I have to get my LO birth certificate so I can get hers. :)
  • I haven't traveled yet, but we are going to visit DH's brother in London when LO will be about 4 months old. I'll be interested to see any tips people have! Friends have told me it's easier to travel before LOs are mobile so we are trying to take advantage.

  • I think DD was in 6 countries her first year of life, including Thailand at 8 weeks.  In my opinion, the younger they are the easier it is. That first trip to Thailand was a piece of cake. She was EBF so no worries about packing food, she slept on the plane and had virtually no jet lag since she was sleeping all the time anyway.

    Here's what I would recommend:
-Do your research on the plane's seat configuration and get a bulkhead seat with the bassinet if there is one (maybe on a shorter flight like to Belize there wouldn't be though). Feed for take-off and landing to help with pressure in the ears
-Pack an extra set of clothes for you in your carry on.  On my first trip I brought everything I could think of for LO but was left wearing stinky clothes when I diaper blow out soaked through to my pants
-Bring lots of clothes for LO if you don't want to pay for hotel laundry. I tried to wash in the sink with detergent, but it just didn't cut it for baby stains and smells
-disposable swim diapers are awesome, but hard to find outside of the states, so consider bringing them

    Have fun!

  • We've only been to canada internationally with a kid, but wanted to add that look into a passport for your LO soon. It is kind of a pain because both parents and baby need to be there (or you need a notarized letter from the parent not there). We had to go twice bc the first time wear the short form of the birth certificate and needed the long form.

I would def go to Belize. A beach vacation is very doable with a baby.

  • We are going to St.lucia when LO will be almost 3 months. Right now I'm freaking out bc her birth certificate was supposed to be in last week but as of yesterday was not in, so we haven't been able to get her passport paperwork started yet. We are going to have to expedite the process and it's still going to be cutting it close!

We are going to curbside check stroller/car seat and have an overnight layover so we aren't rushed to make a connection.

  • @Dani0329‌ we got DD1's passport very quickly. We thought we would have to expedite but when we went to the post office he said we would be fine because some times of year are slower. You may want to ask about that.

  • @JessAnnJ‌ Thank you! We just for her birth certificate today and the first appointment they had was for 11-25. :( The man who scheduled the appointment said since we are leaving 01-07 that we should expedite to be safe. FX everything comes I time.
