It's official...

We are moving. MH got a great job offer in Oklahoma. We went to visit over the weekend, and we were both pretty impressed with both the company and the city. It's a really great opportunity for MH, and it will actually be closer to my family.

I'm a little worried and overwhelmed, because he will be starting in early January, which means we will be moving over the holidays. It won't really make sense to do much decorating and such, but I don't want E to miss out on anything Christmas related. Any tips or advice on moving with LO's, especially during the holidays, would be appreciated!

I'm really nervous about leaving my home, I love my job, my friends, my community, and my nanny. But I'm also excited and looking forward to it, and think the slower pace of life will be good for our family.

Wow! I hope it ends up being the right decision for your family. When you say moving over the holidays do you mean the week between christmas and New Years or before Christmas? If it was me and the move was after Christmas I would still do the things that are important traditions even if you didn't go crazy with decorating. E will still be excited about the things that are important to you that way. My LO was only 8m at the time we moved. My only advice is to start packing early as it is tougher with LOs around. And be aware that the sound of the tape gun might terrify them. I then tried to unpack his room first and arranged the furniture in much the same way it had been in his old room. We also stuck to our routines as much as possible in both homes. He did well other than having to re- sleep train. I think he thought watching the movers was neat. Good luck.

Also maybe if there are presents you don't want to open and then pack back up right away maybe Santa could have them at the new house as a house warming present?

Thanks kaf! We don't know the move date yet. We just moved to our house a year ago, so I know how hard to is to pack with a toddler running around, but there will be 2 this time! Luckily our relocation is covered by the company, so the movers will do the majority of the packing and such. There will still be a lot to do though. Thanks for the tips.

Congratulations! I'm really excited for you! It sounds like a great opportunity for the whole family. I know it's going to hurt leaving the city and people you love, so big ((hugs)) there!

I really like the idea of gifts at the new house! Thank goodness you have movers to pack! That hurts my head thinking about packing with 2 kiddos... Blegh!

That's great that you have movers. That should help a lot. Will you be spending Christmas Day at your old house, new house, family's house? We moved over Christmas two years ago. We didn't do any decorating at our old house, but we stayed with my parents for a month or so before we moved into our new house and celebrated Christmas there. I would do little things wherever you will be for the actual holiday. Good luck with everything!

@mdiblasi10 Yes, Christmas day will be at my parents'. Maybe we will just put up stockings and a mini tree wherever we are, so there's something up, but not too much to deal with.

Good luck, tj! I grew up in tulsa and my parents still live there.

I had kind of a nightmare move experience with our mover. Let me know if you want some tips of things I wish I had known ahead of time!

Do you ever come to visit them? OMG, we could have a play date!

Please do send me your tips!! We used a moving company with our last move, but only to haul our boxes and furniture, they didn't actually pack our things. Any tips would be so helpful!

Tj, our visits have slowed way down since we've had D and now with our move. I will definitely look you up the next time we go to OK for sure!

The packing was actually pretty smooth and really was the best part about having the company-paid move. Just be sure to properly enumerate you "high value" items as they won't be covered by insurance if they are not listed out and identified. All of our breakables made made it intact.

What I didn't do, but should have was keep a close eye on the inventory list both going in and out.

We had a few small items that went missing (nothing all that valuable. Fortunately) I know when I submit my insurance claim they will probably give me a hard time. Also our driver was an ass (did a crap inventory) and damaged a lot of our furniture. We had a shuttle truck to get things to the big truck-- could not be avoided due to our location. But I'm pretty sure the furniture was damaged when it was moved out of the small truck and into the bug truck. And buy the full value replacement insurance! I have a giant claim heading toward out moving company (which was a big name outfit, too).

Unfortunately, you can pick your moving company, but not the individual driver who does the major part of the move.

How exciting! What a great time of year to move and be closer to family. I agree a little tree and stockings is all you need. It will be a good year to focus on the values of the Holiday you want the kids to remember and not be distracted by all the hoopla! Good luck with your move, I think you will make new friends easily with your personality.

I moved twice within 6 months in 2012 - once at 6 months pregnant and again when DS was about 1 - 2 months old. Obviously a lot different than your situation, but just take all the help you can get!

@mcgeeva I am sure I will be going back to work once I find a job there. I will probably stay home at first to help get the house in order, and make sure we can line up excellent child care. Not going through the day care shit-storm we went through when we move to this last house. Luckily it's a good area for my field, so I should be able to find something.
