Best way to get up after you've sat down...

This is a legitimate question..

I was playing with out 1 year old puppy a few nights back and I was sitting on the floor with her wrestling toys out of her mouth..Baby daddy wasn't home from work yet, and then the sudden realization of getting up came to point.

Here I was, in the middle of the room, no furniture within 5 feet and literally just "stuck". I tried using our 40 pound dog for leverage, but once she realized what was going on, she took off upstairs (little bastard), SO, I tried rocking back and forth a few times, which really did nothing but make me laugh at how stupid I must have looked. Finally, I was able to rollover on my knees and crawl to the stairs where I guided myself up by the railing. Once I caught my breath, I couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably, but in all seriousness, it was a good 8 or 9 minutes of me trying to stand...I find this happens on the couch sometimes, too. If i'm sunk in and I try rocking back and forth. Honey is usually good about running over and helping me up, but I really am curious.

With this being my first child, is there an easy way to move up and down? How do you maneuver and do your everyday routine with this giant belly!!?

  • I don't typically sit on the floor but if I do I sit near something I know I can use to help me get up! As for sitting on my couch I roll to my right and kinda slide off to stand. I just really try not to put myself in situations I can't get out of.

Yes, I should probably evaluate the sitting situation before commiting LOL!
  • I lean to one side or another, swing my legs around and then under me, then on to my hands and knees, one foot on the ground (like I'm proposing) and then I leverage off that quad to help push myself up.  Maybe you can rearrange furniture a little so there's something nearby.

If I'm not near furniture I just scootch around the hardwood until I find something to hold on to... If I didn't have that option I would do what @Hernsy said, roll to my knees and then use my finger tips to push myself off the floor... it's a little painful, I think the baby gets pinched in the process and I'm convinced my fingers won't hold me much longer... But it works...

Honestly, right now I have to roll onto my hands and knees and step up one foot at a time.  I don't know if I'll be able to do that in a month, though.

    Yup! That's what I do.
  • I laughed when I read this because it happened to me last night!! I had to call DH to come and help me up after playing with DD on the floor...

If I had no help nearby, I would have rolled over onto my hands and knees and crawled to the nearest ottoman or couch. :)

  • I have a hard time believing it was THAT hard getting up judging by your smallish bump (as you described in the "I need opinions! Feeling a little worried" thread).

  • DH had started to anticipate that I need help. Tonight whenever he saw me getting up he extended a hand for me to pull on to get leverage, without my asking. He's sweet, even if he chuckled at me every time.

In all seriousness, I don't even try to get on the floor unless I am by furniture.

  • I get on my knees and the get into a squatting position to get up and then grab on to something. Occasionally leaning towards one side before getting on my knees helps.

  • I will have to pay attention to how I get up. I am in the floor a million times a day with DS and while it takes a little more effort these days, I have to say getting up hasn't been a problem. Oh, and I am pretty huge already.
  • Ha ha.... This is how I feel
  • I don't have trouble getting up from the floor because its hard.  The bed however is another story.  That requires some rolling and rocking.
  • I do the turtle shell roll, like a turtle stuck on its back, if I'm in a reclined or lying down position if hubby isn't near by to help me up. If I'm sitting on the floor, I roll over onto my knees and stand up one foot at a time. If I'm just sitting, like in a chair, then I use my arms to get up. It may become a bigger problem for me in the coming months, but for now I'm doing ok getting up and around on my own.

  • How to get up while pregnant:

Step 1- Try to get up, fail miserably and fall back down
Step 2- Make lots of necessary grunting noises
Step 3- Kick legs in the air for leverage whilst making necessary grunting noises
Step 4- Roll side to side like a turtle on it's back, making grunting noises
Step 5- Give up and ask for a bowl of ice cream

I have a hard time getting up, most of the time I have my 9 month old in my arms, which makes it extra hard. I feel the pain!

The dog. He's 100lb German Shepard and solid. My piece of furniture to lean on comes to me when called. I grab him around his neck and I hoist myself up from wherever I've gotten to.
