Hamster or gerbril?

in Toddlers: 24 Months+
today is my sons 5th birthday and for well over a month he's been asking for a hamster, but I'm not sure if a hamster or gerbril is better? I've never had either, any suggestions?

    neither if you like your wiring  ....unless you plan to put a lock on the cage and your son can only get it out with supervision ??  :)

    I'd say neither until the kid is able to clean the cage on his own.  Are 5 year olds ready for that?  

    I had 2 birds as a kid, but wasn't allowed to get them until I could clean up after them myself.  Pretty sure we'll be following the same policy for our kids (with the exception of fish).

    I've had some pretty vicious hampsters over the years. They also can and will bite holes in clothing, are master escape artists and run on the wheel incessantly at night.

    I'm sorry - but I vote neither. 5 is quite young to be responsible for an animal. And like PP have said - they bite and chew alot
