Wondering if tens machines work

hi all
I went to my antenatal class on the weekend and my midwife suggested a tens machine as I'm wanting a natural birth. I had never heard of these before and am wanting some first hand advice as to whether they helped with labour? if so any recommendations? I'd prefer to buy one then hire as she said there's one that helps with tightening the pelvic floor after birth so that sounds worth it. Thanks guys.
