Nursery decorations above the crib

In theory I know how I where I want to hang the wall decorations in the nursery, but then I worry about the practicality. Are any of you hanging decorations or picture frames on the wall the crib is up against? I have 4 framed prints I wanted to put above the crib but H always brings up the possibility of them falling off the wall and into the crib. He didn't want to hang a shelf above the changing table, but I explained that the baby isn't there very often and is always supervised by us.

Should I leave the wall by the crib bare just to be safe?

We have stuff hanging above baby's crib. We had stuff over DD's crib when she was a baby as well. I just made sure to hang it high enough that it couldn't be reached and made sure it was secure.

  • We live in an area where earthquakes can happen so I never hung up anything over DDs crib. I am probably overly paranoid, I'm sure there are ways to safely secure things :)
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Thanks everyone. I'm finding out H is very safety aware, almost to the extreme. But then of course when I try to tell him things will be fine as long as we do a good job securing things then I feel bad for not worrying as much as maybe I should.

  • We hung letters but they were high up and on VERY tight!

My hubby is more safety aware then me as well! About EVERYTHING when it comes to DD, which surprised me as he isn't this way with anything else :)
  • If I put anything over the crib it will probably just be the vinyl wall decals, but plenty of people hang letters over cribs and I haven't heard of any issues arising from it.

  • I have a bunch of pictures over her crib but I made sure to place them high enough that she won't be able to reach them. Her crib is also a good couple inches off the wall.
  • We just put this decal over the crib this weekend (Pooh themed nursery).

  • I could be wrong because I'm a FTM, but I thought the crib is supposed to be kept like 6" away from the wall vs. directly against it?
I know that still doesn't guarantee things won't fall into it but it's less likely I think.
I have wooden letters with her name hung above the crib with command strips. They're very secure so I'm not too worried about it.

I've never heard this before. Do you know why they say to do that?
  • Baby #3 and he will have things handing on the wall above the crib :) Once I get around to it that is lol

  • I'm paranoid about that stuff. We don't have anything hanging over our bed for that reason. We just have decals or we will when I put them up :)

I put a decal over the crib. Like @tripletoe, I grew up in SoCal and experienced every major earthquake in the 80s and 90s. I live in Ohio now, but it is so ingrained in me that I would never put anything that could fall over the crib. That's just my deal though. But, really, if it is really secure and high, I am sure you will be fine.

They told us something similar in one of our classes. They didn't say 6", just away from the wall. The reasoning they gave was because as the child gets older, they will rock the crib and hit the wall and our immediate reaction the first time it happens is to come running. Once the child knows that will cause you to come running, they will keep doing it. So, the reasoning they gave us wasn't a safety thing, it was just so your kid didn't make you panic in the middle of the night thinking there was a freight train in your house.

  • Either embroidery hoops or paper mache letters are going on the wall above the crib, or both... We don't slam doors and earthquakes aren't too common in WA (knock on wood) but I will hang them securely as possible. At least they are light so they wouldn't cause much damage if they fell in the crib.
