Self soothing

Does anyone else's LO seem completely incapable of self soothing? We want to start sleep training but I'm concerned since he doesn't seem to have any of this skill currently. Should be just go for it and he'll learn or do we need to wait until he is able to do some self soothing? TIA

  • Every baby is different. I tried everything with my first (now 4) but she wasn't having the cry it out, no self soothe, sleep training or anything. She would wake every hour, it was exhausting. Finally at one year we tried cry it out again (checking in now and then) and it worked. She only cried for about 15 minutes My current new one is somewhat the same. Better sleeper overall. Still not a good self soother, but sometimes she is getting better. I would say give what you feel is best a try and adapt from there. You'll never know what works or died t for your baby until you try.
  • DS does not self soothe, he goes to sleep being nursed or rocked. I have never let him cry for more than a few minutes, he gets too worked up and it's just harder to get him back down.
  • As said, one point of sleep training is to teach them to self soothe. Liam did not self soothe before sleep training and the first couple nights were rough, but he's awesome now. Many times he'll put himself back to sleep if he wakes up MOTN or during a nap.

You do what works best for your family!

Same here. I nurse her to sleep otherwise it won't happen without letting her cry and I don't feel comfortable letting her cry.
This is new though because when she was 3-4 months up until 5 months I wiuld put her down awake and she would lut herself to sleep by sucking her paci or finger or thumb and wouldn't cry, but that changed!

Same. I try the Ferber method every once in a while but I don't think either of us are ready for it- she gets very worked up.
  • Thanks all for your responses. DS does do the moaning and uses a paci to help. Going down at night isn't terrible, it's more the night wake ups, which have plentiful as of late. We're just trying to figure out phew to stay sane at this point...

This is us. DS can get himself to fall asleep at night when I lay him down but cannot do it during MOTN wake ups. Sometimes he can get himself back down but that seems to have gotten worse as of late. Idk what to do!! This is starting to take a toll on DH and I.
