Breast pump to hospital?

Hey all--

I'm 34w and packing my bag for the hospital (!!! can't believe that step is already here). My breast pump is included on The Bump's suggested items to bring in your bag, but anyone elaborate on why? I didn't think my milk would come in until day 3 or 4 anyway (when we'd hopefully be home), and I figured anything I produce in hospital would go right into baby's mouth. Is it just so a nurse or lactation consultant can assist you with any questions on how it works?

For those that did pack it, what all did you include--multiple bottles/containers too?! It just seems like a lot to bring...

TIA!

Re: Breast pump to hospital?

  • I will be in hospital 5 days due to health issues/risk of infection following my c-section.
I had supply issues with my first so I plan to hit the pump the second my milk comes in to increase supply.

  • Thank you all--very helpful feedback!!
  • My DS had trouble latching initially and wasn't able to get much (even the tiny amount they need when newborn). I was able to pump and give him a little extra with a syringe. I hated the pump the ins provided, but the hospital pump was wonderful.

  • I was told to only really bring one if I want help in learning how to use it. If I have to pump at the hospital they will have one available, so maybe check and see?

  • My DS never latched and my hospital doesn't offer electric pumps.  I had to pump by hand until we bought our pump when DS was 5 days old.  My hands were killing me using the hand pump.  My pump is ready and packed to go with me to the hospital this weekend.  If it's not needed, it can sit in the car but I'd rather know it's there.  This coming from someone who EPd for 9 months.
