CPT: Who Should Pay for Required Equipment/Technology for Work?

Just curious what you think about this and/or what your experience has been. Here's the scenario:

You are transferring to a work-from-home position within the same company that requires a laptop. You have a mac, but the company requires a PC. Should you have to pay for it yourself?

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.

Yes, of course.

You probably will have to pay for it yourself/my company would require you to pay yourself, but that's pretty shitty of them.

My company would pay for it, but I think that's not common.

You shouldn't have to pay for it yourself/my company would pay for it and I think most others would too.

Absolutely not! That's absurd.

This is why you should just live on government skittles, so you don't have to worry about these kinds of things.

DH is putting in for a position that would require us to buy a PC, at our own expense. I think that's bullshit; he just shrugged and said most people probably already have PCs so whatever.

But it would be WAH, so it could move with us at a moment's notice if I get a job elsewhere; and it's got options for alternative schedules that could allow me to teach day classes without taking L to daycare; and it's a 10% raise which would help cushion the blow of the 17% of DH's take-home pay that's going to be diverted into his HSA starting Jan. 1 to pay for L's stuff. So I guess I can swallow my irritation and do some Black Friday shopping if he gets it :)
    keeping my fingers crossed!

  • When I transitioned to WAH, I supplied the computer. My boss was doing me a favor letting me stay at home with DS. He does pay for my iphone and he also gave me a company phone for my house. I can answer calls that come into the office as if I was sitting in the office and not at home. I have my own computer that is dedicated for work.

  • I think it depends. I WAH I bought my computer I am an employee and can go work in office and check out a laptop. Which I sometimes do to go to clients office because I have a desktop my DH built for me.
My friend works for same company but she is independent contractor she is expected to get most things on her own but can use office as needed. But we do not like going to office so we often come out of pocket.
I also think it depends on what they are asking for ie. a general PC or specific make/Model, software etc

My company didn't say it out right but they want you to have a smart phone too. When they set up my email I was told make sure I link to my phone. I don't complain because I like the job flexibility and pay but I hate the actual job lol.

  • Nope, you shouldn't have to pay for it yourself. At least in Europe, companies should pay for any equipment employees need... They even pay for the Internet connection at home most of the times.
