Sibling name matching question

We have 2 girls and would like to TTC #3 in the soon-ish future. My question is: Our girls both have N names (unintentional) and the same middle initial (also unintentional) so would it be better to go with another N name or something completely different? I have both N and non-N names in mind (unintentional again) for either a boy or a girl.

Re: Sibling name matching question

  • I am sensitive to keeping things equal, so I would stick with any trend you have already started.

  • I agree with keeping the theme/trend. I feel like out of three children if the first and third child share the same letter then it's a coincidence, but if it's the first and second with the third child having a different letter it has me confused.

  • Go with a non-N name. I'd roll my eyes at three kids with same initial. Two is no big deal.
  • Most of the boy names I like are N names...

You guys are about 50-50 on it and pretty much said what I'm thinking. We didn't mean to give them the matching names and if I'd thought about it before we came across DD2's name which felt like "the one" there's no way I'd do that on purpose but at the same time, it's now going to bug me if #3 doesn't match.

*sigh* Naming imaginary future babies is hard.
  • I think it's fine... Pick names you like. They are individuals.
  • I see your dilemma.  Since you have 2 girls, if you have a boy you could do a non-N name and it would be fine.  Another girl with an N name would be matchy, but it would make sense?  I would just pick the name you like the most and go with it.  However it turns out is fine.
  • I'd go with a non N name personally.

Mine is a little different because I'm the oldest, but we are three sisters I'm the odd man out. Mine is an S, the other two are J and none of us care one bit. I'd say go with any name you like, but don't try to stick with the N theme.

  • I would do a N name because I actually think it's cute.

  • Far too matchy. I would give #3 a non-N name. If you are worried that he may feel "left out," you could use the same middle initial as your daughters.

My 2 top name choices are Nell (girl) and Nolan (boy), not on purpose.
I'd rather move away from matching them but there are no other names that I really love.
All chosen without intentionally seeking N names. There are some letters we actively avoid because of awkward initials with our surname and MN are all family connections so #3's middle initial definitely won't be the same as the girls.

    edit: clarity
  • What are the girls names?

I agree that I would focus on choosing a name you absolutely love regardless of the first letter. I am not for matchy matchy, but I also don't think avoiding your favorite name makes sense in this situation. It feels easier for you to break away is baby is a boy.

  • The girls are Norah and Niamh (said neeve). I really do love the name Nell but Nolan I could walk away from for something else that's really good.

DH is no help at all, he said to just pick something and if he likes it we'll use it but I started overthinking it.
  • My FI and I gravitate toward A names, when we first started talking names, his favorites were Alexander and Annabelle while mine were Augustus and Azalea. Now both of our favorites are Augustus and Sylvia but we sort of know when naming future babies that it might end up that we have more than one child with an A name.

We've decided that we will just use the name that we love the most. They won't be a sibset forever. I think same letter is fine but I also think that two with the same letter and the third without is fine too!

  • I don't think it matters. It won't look like you ditched a theme with number three if you go with a non-N name. Choose what you love.

  • I would say don't intentionally try to stick with the initial trend, but if it happens, it happens. Just pick names you like and don't worry if they wind up with the same initials or not. That must be confusing if you ever wanted to monogram something ;)

Thankfully we're not a monogramming family!
It might get confusing with mail though - my mom and sister share an initial so they just have to make an educated guess when something shows up with just an initial and surname!
  • I don't think I WANT to continue the theme, it just happens that the girl name I love is an N name too. I can say with absolute certainty that we won't have any more than 3 kids (unless #3 turns out to be multiples) so if #3 IS given an N name, we won't be forced to continue the theme after that because we already had 3 Ns.

The theme definitely does not continue to pets either, that's just weird.
