WDYT - Am I overprotective?

DD has a cold a while she is getting better she still has a stuffy nose and wakes up with a yucky cough.  She goes to an in-house sitter with two kids and they go to the bus stop in the mornings.  We are getting hit with this cold wave and it is supposed to be under 20 degrees tomorrow morning at the bus stop.  I thought she would drive to the stop but instead she plans to walk and wait outside for the bus to come.  They will not be out there a long time - I'd say no more than 10 minutes - but I don't love the idea of DD being out in the cold with her cold, even if she has blankets on, etc.  Am I that crazy overprotective mom or would you not like this either?  I am thinking of having my dad bring her to the sitter's after the boys get on the bus.

Re: WDYT - Am I overprotective?

  • @LalaMama81 - yeah, I am kind of stuck with this situation all winter too so I am trying to figure out how I feel about it in general.  My DS gets driven to school and when we started with this sitter in the summer I just really didn't think it through enough.

  • I say it's fresh air and good for her.

  • Toddlers are sick from October to April. Winter happens. As others said fresh air will do her good. Get a good snow suit and she'll be fine.
  • I am sure you all are correct.  I just have to bundle her up I guess.  It is going to be 12 degrees with the windchill tomorrow morning at the time she'll be out which just seems really freaking cold.  We don't normally have temps that cold around here, at least in November.

  • I still have the infant carrier and stroller that goes with it.  You can close the canopies on the two pieces to pretty much enclose the top completely.  I think I will leave that whole contraption with her and she can wheel my LO to the bus stop in that.

  • Vinny - It may seem that way but I honestly don't.  The car question I asked before because I was trying to figure out whether other people had their sitter strapping the seat in without the base or not - that was all.  And 12 degrees is freaking cold - I don't want to stand outside when it's 12 degrees.  So like I said above I'll roll with it but that doesn't mean I love the idea.

I just like to gauge what other people are doing sometimes.  I guess I should stop doing that.

  • No worries Vinny. I can see why you would get that impression.

  • I'm in the "fresh air will do her good" camp. It's only for 10 minutes, and this isn't the only time it will be cold this winter.
  • 12 is cold- even I don't like being outside for more than to and from the car when it's less than 20 outside. Personally I wouldn't do it.
  • 12? That's hardly cold ;) Over here it's -4 and I still go out for walks every day!
LO loves the fresh air (unless it's windy but then I put a cover over the stroller and she's fine).
I think she'll be ok, but do what you're comfortable doing!
  • I look at it this way - if I was home with a baby and had to get the older child to the bus stop, I would do what was needed. Aka bundle up baby. So I wouldn't have an issue with this. I would be sure your provider has everything she needs to keep LO warm.
