Ice!

Has anyone else had an obsession with eating ice lately? I have found that I will order ice water, even at drive-thrus, and get extra ice, or even just large cups of ice, just so I can chew on it.. H thinks its weird and annoying  :P

I've heard that this is a sign of pica during pregnancy. You may want to ask your OB about it at your next visit. ETA: It can indicate an iron deficiency.

    Common Pregnancy And Pica Cravings

The most common substances craved during pregnancy are dirt, clay, and laundry starch. Other pica cravings include: burnt matches, stones, charcoal, mothballs, ice, cornstarch, toothpaste, soap, sand, plaster, coffee grounds, baking soda, and cigarette ashes.

  • Have your iron levels been checked? Sometimes craving ice can be a sign of anemia. Or it could be a totally normal pregnancy craving.

Hmmm, wow that's surprising, I would've never thought that since its just frozen water.. my mom said she did it during pregnancy too! *Side Note: I did actually have a PICA dx as a small child* I'll def mention this at my next appt!

Yes, I am anemic and have struggled with anemia periodically for years.. but the ice "craving"--I guess that's what it's become-- has been more-so since I started taking Iron Supplement. I've also had increased water intake (by choice) recently so I thought maybe that was related..  like maybe my body decided water, in all forms, was awesome lol
  • Also, I didn't mean for this to become a medical advice discussion.. I honestly had no clue that this may be something to be addressed medically! & thank you for your responses and concern!
  • Not plain ice, but you know those freeze pops that come unfrozen in boxes? I've been really into eating those, when normally I don't think they're that good. They seem to settle my stomach a bit when I'm nauseous. (I am anemic btw, not sure if it's coincidence.)

  • Yay! @thompnia & @moonfaerie I feel not as alone in this now.. Also, it seems to help with my heartburn for some reason, even when really really cold water doesn't!
  • I love to eat the ice at work because it gets kinda squishy (if that makes sense) and is easily crushed. I crave it pregnant or not!
  • My work has a slushie machine for patients (and staff) and I really really enjoy those lately too.. especially because of the teeny tiny pieces of ice I can crunch on..  :D
  • I crave , eat ice everyday because low iron and now I'm taking liquid iron. Still love ice ;;)
  • I want all my cold drinks with ice. Can't crunch it though, teeth are too sensitive.

  • I was all about the ice with my second. My iron levels were normal, but I couldn't get enough of the stuff. My Dr said as pica goes it was relatively harmless. This time it is fruit infused water. Stick a container in the fridge that has cut up fruit covered with water and leave it overnight. Lemon slices, cucumber slices, pineapple cores... Whatever your pleasure. You are welcome.
  • I chew on ice all day. I did with my last pregnancy too. I am anemic, however despite my iron supplement, this is still a craving. It's my only craving actually.

  • I eat ice all the time, w my previous daughter i stopped immediately after having her. I was also anemic. Im no longer anemic but back to eating ice every min
  • I wasn't anemic with my first, but I could NEVER get enough ice. It was so bad I would get emotional if I couldn't get some.
  • I love Ice!  Major craving along with fruit.  My iron is a little low but I take Vitamins for it.  Very interesting that it can be attached to the ice craving :-).
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • I have low iron and have been taking iron supplements but have been eating anywhere from 3-6 cups of crushed ice every day!! sooo good!!!!
  • For me, ice craving = anemia.  I would definitely mention it to your dr. and ask to have your iron levels checked.  Also, just because you're on an iron supplement does not necessarily mean you're not anemic.  There could be an absorption issue, so I would still ask to have it checked out.
  • Sometimes I just like to crunch ice. Specifically sonic ice. :P

I love ice, pregnant or not...anyone who knows me knows me as an "ice connoisseur"! There are places that have "good" ice and those that have "bad" ice! Sonic has awesome ice, but unfortunately, there are none in my area :( The closest one to me is probably 2 hours away!!!

I LOVE Sonic ice, even when not preg, also. It's sad that you don't have one in your area :(
