Feeding ?---maybe I just need reassurance

Does it seem like feeding is a battle for anyone? This morning DS2 nursed at 430, and then I tried again at 730 (which is our normal feeding time) and he didn't want anything to do with that. So DH tried solids and he took 1 bit. DS2 is only 17 lbs (16%) so I know I need to get calories in him but sometimes it is just a battle and DS2 ends up winning. Seems like I just fight with him all day to get him to eat and he doesn't want to, but then he wakes 2 to 3 times at night to eat. We are a month out of skull surgery, so that may have something to do with it, but does anyone else 'battle' with their LO to eat?

Re: Feeding ?---maybe I just need reassurance

  • @utpony sorry you are going through this too. I feel so helpless and stressed. I just wish it would be easier :) He used to eat bottles just fine, I know he does not like change so trying to feed him some where other then home or the sitters is tough. I just want this phase over and him to be on 3 meals (that he will eat and snacks) so we can stop fighting the bottles so much. Hang in there

  • DD has significantly dropped the amount of bottles she takes, but wants any and everything that she can feed herself. Pedi said this is normal-most kids at this age are drinking 16-24oz of milk now as opposed to the 28-32 they were drinking before. I'm fighting to get her to take the minimum 16oz anymore... It's like she is over bottles.

  • Yup, constant struggle here too.  Although he doesn't wake up to eat.

I don't understand it.  Food is like the best thing ever.
  • Similar issues here, although LO is generally a good sleeper even if he doesn't eat well that day.

Solids are a constant struggle.  I call 6 bites of puree a success and although he tries to feed himself, if he actually swallows ANYTHING I dance for joy.

Some days he inhales bottles (30+ oz).  Other days getting him to take anything is a struggle.  He's on the smaller side- at one point 2nd percentile, up to 15th at his 6 mo.  We have our 9 mo appointment tomorrow.  Eating and size are towards the top of my list to discuss.

Sorry you are all dealing with this, but it's kinda nice to hear I'm not alone.

  • @Meghan14 I agree with you. I am sure glad to know that I am not on the only one struggling with this. Hang in there :)

  • babyG is right there with @JackieP1023 's DD.  dc and I were discussing trying some other options, he's taking 4-6oz bottles (on the 6ers he usually only drinks 5) where he was taking 8oz 4x per day, and barely wants (like cries out in between) to eat purees.  He's all about the puffs and cheese-curl-type foods (whatever he can shove in his own mouth).  I took one of the net feeders to dc today, and she may start trying some fruits (grapes etc) to see if he'll like that.

he hasn't gotten the hang of sippy cups yet, or I'd be trying to give him his formula in one of those!

  • Sorry to highjack thread, but wanted to update after pedi appointment this morning.

Re: Bottles- he is up to 29th percentile so she thinks he is clearly eating enough, even if it's inconsistent.  We are sticking with the high-calorie formula proportions though.
Re: Solids- she is not worried and thinks he will eventually get it in his own time.

Hopefully the news on the solids can help reassure some of you.  ((HUGS)) mamas.

  • @meghan14 thank you for the update, I am glad you posted this. It is reassuring to know that the pedi isn't super concerned. I need to remember that everything happens at different times for kids and DS2 will be fine :) I just need to take a chill pill
