Man….5 has been hard. I'm in uncharted territory. DS1 has two "friends" who either love each other or hate each other. When these two little boys are getting along, they team up and tease and harass DS. For example, last night DS1 got a new soccer ball because his popped. He ran over to show his friends and they purposely and continuously took the ball from him and threw or kicked it as far away from him as they could. Then they told him over and over "we're not your friends anymore, we don't like you" I just encouraged DS to play somewhere else and I tried to play soccer with him but he was really hurt. We all live on the same street so its not like I can avoid these kids forever. Suggestions? I had no idea kids start acting like cliquey assholes this young.

Ugh - trust me - it only gets worse from here - we're dealing with the similar/same thing - at school - with a 9yo... Our latest was DD grew from a 4 kids to 6.5 women's shoe over the summer. We instantly had a cold snap with snow and DD needed boots. I went to the store and purchased some for her because there wasn't time for her to come with me. She wears them to school and this other girl who is a "fair weather friend" accused her of copying her because she got the same boots and made a stink about it to other kids that DD was copying her (mind you - these are Walmart boots - we're not talking designer here). DD tried to explain that I had purchased them for her without DD's input, but this person made her feel horrible to the point she won't wear the boots anymore except around here(granted the ones I got were big and needed to get another pair in a smaller size).
I never remember it being this bad with kids being actually mean to eachother - if they didn't like you, you both equally just kept your distance. IMO you did exactly the right thing. Good luck and just roll with it. The odd part is, they're going to rotate back and forth between the love-hate thing for years...
