Newborn Photos

This is my question of the day, I guess!

Do you think newborn photos are worth it? We do the low-cost hospital ones. Last time, I also had a professional photographer do a session at our home. The pictures are super cute, but the photographer's prices have gone up a lot. Looks like we'd spend close to $500 on the sitting fee plus some images (prints start at $40). I'm looking at other options, but also just wondering...is it even worth it?

WDYT? If you have older kids, do you find their newborn pics to be absolutely precious, or do you feel like you might as well have waited until the baby was more mobile and interactive and smiley?

Re: Newborn Photos

  • I got my newborn photos for free because the photographer was teaching a newborn photography workshop, and DD3 was one of the models. I love the pictures, but there's no way I could have afforded this photographer otherwise. I did the inexpensive hospital ones with my other two girls. If you have the money, and you don't mind spending it, I'm sure you won't regret getting the pictures. That just wouldn't be in my budget.

  • I'd find someone who is just starting out & use them after viewing some pics they have taken. Much cheaper & still get good pics. I love my newborn pics

  • DD was two weeks old when we did her first photo session. I wish we had spent the money to have someone come photograph her right after she was born. Looking back, I definitely think it's worth it.
  • Definitely do it 10 days old or less...that's the best time. According to my photography friends

  • I will say we didn't, and since my boys were in the NICU for 17 days it wouldn't have been on the time frame most suggest. All being said I don't regret it. I have great pictures of them that I took myself and looked great when I got them printed. For me it wasn't about the money( I have family who are photographers), it was about the time and since my guys were preemies and born during RSV and flu season, I wanted little contact directly with anyone who could pass along their germs.
  • I didn't get any for my LO and I regret it. However, I would not pay that price. I would try and shop around a bit. Maybe some upcoming photographers can give you a good deal or local photography enthusiasts/mom-ographers.
  • Worth every penny!
  • I'd see about taking LO to their studio instead of in-home as that might save a few pennies...

With DD I took some of her at about 6 weeks old and they're awesome... DS however was not the little photogenic one and I have didly squat for good newborn-6w old pics of him and looking back even as stressed out as I was (he was in the PICU his first week then wasn't STTN nor were we cleared to use a bouncer or swing with him), I wish we'd have had them done by a friend who's a pro regardless of what she'd have charged...

It's great to have them because they change so quickly. My MIL did ours...I would have a hard time paying that much money for them. She's not a professional photographer, but has an eye for it and a good camera.
