Alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen

How do you do it? Dumb questions I know. I just gave him ibuprofen. When do I do the first dose of acetaminophen?

TIA :)

  • You mainly want to make sure that each tylenol dosage is still at least 4 hours apart, and each ibuprofin dosage is still at least 6 hours apart, and give the least amount of medicine needed to get the fever down.  I'll only use both medicines if the ibuprofin alone won't keep the fever down for the full 6 hours, so I usually end up giving the tylenol when the ibuprofin has worn off.  Ibuprofin works better than tylenol at fever reduction, so when in doubt, start with that.
  • Our Pedi told us not to alternate anymore, just stick with one med.

  • Thanks ladies. :)

His temp was 102 when I gave him the medicine three hours ago. It's 102.1 now. He's acting fine. I think we will try a bath.

Thanks for asking :). The meds weren't helping, so I took him to the pedi. It turns out he has an ear infection and viral infection. No flu thankfully. He's on antibiotics for the next ten days. He's pretty pitiful right now: fever, shivers, lots of snot, and miserable. Hopefully the antibiotics will knock this crap out fast.

  • Glad you at least have some answers. I hope the meds kick his ear infection quickly.

  • He's definitely better this morning. Very minimal fever, not as runny nose, and he looks like Sean again (he was looking very dull and miserable). So yay! Thanks again ladies.
