Is it really time to think about potty training?

Within the past week and a half Adeline has been showing more and more signs of being ready to start potty training.  She does not like having a dirty diaper and will grab at it or go and grab her diaper basket when she is ready to be changed.  She has some definite times when I know she will go potty (right after meals, the second that I turn the tub water on) and I'm wondering if maybe I should just stick her on a potty seat for those times and see how she does.  I have absolutely no expectation that she is 100% ready but I'm wondering if it's worth a shot or if I should wait.  I don't know if I'm ready for this but it would also be absolutely amazing if I could have her potty trained by the time her brother arrives!  Thoughts?

  • I think we had a big discussion on this last week or the week before, can't remember (not trying to be bitchy, just wanted to let you know in case you don't get much of a response).

    :)
  • Thank you @haddocky - I actually searched back a few pages but didn't see anything, I'll look harder!!  I figured someone else had probably posted about this since we're hitting that age!

  • It is definitely possible. I was trained at 18 mo as well. I am hoping to potty train over Christmas break.

Am I the only one who hasn't even considered potty training yet? Maybe it's just because Haddy doesn't seem anywhere near ready?

Good luck to those that are willing and ready to start that process :)
I'm not. My mom thinks I should so I don't have two in diapers :-@

When P shows me that he's ready, we will try. I'm not rushing him.
  • Totally not crazy to start. With Corri, we started at about 18 months because she was showing an active interest and we took it slow, but we ditched diapers entirely a month after her 2nd birthday and never looked back.

With Gavin, we have already started because he's showing an interest and communicated better than his big sis did at that age, so I am hoping he will train early too.

It wasn't even close to being on my radar until she started showing these signs! I have no idea what I'm doing, my house would probably be covered in pee if I push it!

  • Will be getting a potty for her for Christmas. And it will be more for an introduction. She currently could care less how wet or stinky she is.
  • Some kids train early so if she shows interest it can't hurt to encourage it, but I definitely wouldn't push yet. We tried with Delilah at 2 and she wasn't ready and it was a hellish couple days. We backed off and she started showing interest a few months later and was fully potty trained at 27 months in three days.

Zack also will tell us after he dirties a diaper but then runs when you try to change it. And even though he tells us when he goes, I don't think he has enough understanding to let us know he has to go before it happens which is the big thing. Otherwise it's more like you're training yourself to look for their signs/cues that they have to go which could get tiresome. We did put DDs potty seat back out and he enjoys sitting on it when she goes, but hasn't done anything in it.

  • My DS did not show any interest this early. I bought a potty when he turned 2 and would put him on it very night at bathtime. It took 10 months before he peed. We practiced for 3 months and then right after he turned 3, we did the 3 day method. He was ready and trained easily.

I do feel like DD is showing interest. She says poop and pulls on her diaper after she poops and pees. She hates being in a wet diaper and tells me right away. I am going to start putting her on the potty at 18 months and just see how it goes. Depending on how she does, I might try to train her after she turns 2.

It isn't even on my radar at this point. K potty trained less than a year ago. I'm not ready to go through that again just yet.

Also, one of the major reasons I waited to PT him was because I was pregnant with Iris. Pretty much every single person I talked to said to wait because he would probably regress after she was born. So I didn't push it even though he was over 2.5 when she was born. He basically did it on his own when she was about 6 months old. He never has accidents and gets up in the middle of the night to pee if he needs to.

Here I am pregnant again with a non potty trained kid. And she's way too young for me to even consider it right now.

Yup, I was potty trained at 2 and when my sister came a few months later, I conveniently forgot how to use the potty.
  • I know it's possible but I am not planning to start now.... I was PT by 16 months but I started talking at 11 so by then I had quite good communicative skills...

  • Liam still seems shocked when he pees in bath tub so we are not ready here.
My DD was trained by two DS over three and I submitted to bribery. DS did have a speech delay also and Liam just says mama, dada and babbles so I definitely feel if they are communicating well then go with it.

  • We're doing the "sit on the potty at common times to go" and "hang out with mommy in the bathroom a lot" plan. That said, it'd be great if we could drop a few diapers, but I don't plan to even try potty training until it's way warmer out. I don't want to deal with a toddler who has to pee who's zipped up into snowpants.
