Breastfeeding and Birth Control

Good morning ladies,
My DD is 5 months old currently. Initially I planned to wait a year before returning onto birth control. What birth control are yall using/used and did it effect your milk production? Breastfeeding has been an incredible journey. I worry about my milk supply decreasing or drying up when I start using birth control again.

I was put on Mirena at 8 weeks postpartum. I didn't notice any difference in my supply and had no other ill effects from it.

Eta I did have some supply issues later, but it was due to returning to work and me not responding to the pump very well. But I powered through. We never had to supplement and she's creeping up on 3 years old and is still nursing.

  • I got the Mirena put in 11 weeks PP and within a week my supply had dropped. I have heard of people who DON'T have issues but I really wanted to make BFing work through a year so I made them take it out. Plus the hormones were making me crazy. I think it was a hormone overload being so close PP. I had been on depo shots prior to LO and will go back to that when I am done with BFing. For now we are using old fashion protection lol

  • condoms. i didn't want to be on hormonal BC while breastfeeding, and IUDs kind of freak me out.
  • I've thought about Mirena, my fiancé has only heard the horror stories of it so it worries him. I think it's a good option.
  • I want to reach my one year goal as well. I've heard the mini pill is a good option. Our wedding is in June so I'd like to use birth control until that point. After the wedding I wouldn't mind another little one.
  • I got the Mirena put in 11w pp and have had no ill-effects as well.  In the past I had not responded well to the pill, so I was a little worried about the Mirena, but so far so good! No difference in supply here either :)
  • I've been on the mini-pill for the last 2 years and have had no problems with my supply.  You do have to take it at the same time every day for it to be effective, so if that's an issue for you, I wouldn't recommend it.

  • I can't handle the scheduling of the mini pill, so I temp and stick to condoms until O is confirmed.
  •  I am going to suggest something it seems many younger (than me, I'm a fossil lol) ladies aren't familiar with- the diaphragm. It's AWESOME :)

They come in silicone or rubber, so if you are latex sensitive you can get silicone. They are hormone-free, cheap, easy to use once you get the hang of it, and have no side effects and are immediately reversible (i.e. don't use it if you are ttc). The spermicidal jelly used with it has never bothered me and I'm sensitive to many things, but not that.

And it of course has no effect on bf. I'm bf and getting fitted for a new on at my 6 week visit. I don't want an IUD or anything hormonal, and I'm too old for that safely anyways. I highly recommend the diaphgram. I used it for 10 years before stopping to get preg with this baby and never got preg while using it.
  • I tried the mini pill and LO had a horrible reaction. Very gassy and horrible green poop. Nothing else had changed in my diet. Once I stopped the problems he was having stopped in about four days.
