No Kids?! Freaking out!

Having the biggest pregnancy melt down ever. Checking in to be induced and just heard NO kids on L&D Floor or Post due to Enterovirus. L&D is full right now so I am literally in the waiting room and I see this a sign with the news...

I have heard no kids & other stories like this before but this is hitting me like a ton of bricks. I was unaware and didn't plan for this. I am so sad for me 2 kids not to meet or see baby brother till Thursday or Friday now?

With family and text/photos I'm pissed we may have to share "first" via texts?! I wanted the kids to see him and help name him as we have 2/3 names narrowed down.

All my prep & stories I have been telling them how this will all going to go is out the window....

OMG. For real WTF do I do...

Re: No Kids?! Freaking out!

  • My hospital had an exception for siblings and I've had friends who just chose to ignore the rules and bring the siblings in any way when they were at hospitals who had no kids policy (the nurses could only encourage the policy and not really enforce it).
  • Loading the player...
  • At my local hospital (we live in a reall small town, so that may be part of it) they has put a lock down on kids in labor and delivery. But we asked nicely and they just let our kids put on masks until they got to our room. They may be willing to make an exception if you ask nice.
  • When DD2 was born, our hospital had the same policy in place due to an outbreak of the flu, and I wasn't aware that my older kids couldn't come visit until we were checking in so I also didn't have a chance to prepare them for the change in plans. :( It really does suck, but there were no exceptions, not even for siblings of new babies, so DS and DD1 didn't meet their baby sister until we brought her home.

If you have a computer with you, could you maybe skype with them and introduce them to their new sibling that way? It's not the same as being there in person, obviously, but it might make it feel more real to them than just seeing pictures.
  • I'm sorry, that really does stink:(
I'm with lissydee though, please don't sneak kids in. There may be moms on your floor that have high risk newborns (all newborn babies are vulnerable, but some are life threateningly vulnerable) and kids unintentionally exposing them to the flu could be devastating :(

There were some moms in the NICU that had older kids at home, once they locked down the unit for the flu a number of people used Skype to introduce their older siblings to the new LO, the kids seemed to still enjoy it :)
  • I'm sorry you were hit with this surprise. That really does suck! I'm not sure how old your kids are, but can you try to explain the rules to them in a way that they will know it's to keep the new baby safe?

On the positive side, if your hospital has these rules it means keeping your baby healthy, too.

And I'm pretty appalled people would sneak in kids against hospital rules. That puts everyone in danger. I'd be pissed if I were another patient whose LO's were being put at risk. (Not saying you would do that OP).
