Dumb newbie question about terms

Okay, I can't get thesestraight, and I'd swear the terms are getting used differently on different web pages I've read. I'm having a hard time with these terms:
Flats
Prefolds (flats with extra fabric in the middle, right?)
Inserts
Liners
Doublers

Can someone help? Can some of these be functionally interchangeable? And if I have prefolds, am I likely to need any of the inserts, liners, and/or doublers?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question.

Flats - One layer of fabric (think flour sack towel)
Prefolds - several layers of fabric, with more layers in the middle. and much smaller than a flat
Inserts - Used for stuffing pockets, Usually sized to fit the width of a pocket without folding, but can also be folded or snaped to fit the rise or length.
Liner - Creates a barrier between the baby's skin and diaper.  They can be disposable or fabric.
Doublers - Used to increase absorbancy.

Okay, I can't get thesestraight, and I'd swear the terms are getting used differently on different web pages I've read. I'm having a hard time with these terms:
Flats  large, single ply, flat sheet of fabric
Prefolds (flats with extra fabric in the middle, right?)  a flat that is pre-folded to have four layers of fabric on the outsides, and 8 layers in the middle (usually, number of layers can vary)
Inserts absorbent piece that goes inside of a diaper, often inside a pocket, or inside an all-in-2
Liners  placed between diaper and baby, can be made of fleece to protect baby's skin if they have a wetness sensitivity, can be used to protect diapers from non-CD safe cream, or can be put in solids-eating baby's diaper to help ease poo-removal
Doublers an absorbency booster if current diaper doesn't have enough absorption, often used overnight

Can someone help? Can some of these be functionally interchangeable? And if I have prefolds, am I likely to need any of the inserts, liners, and/or doublers? With prefolds you might never need any of these items.  Unless you are dealing with wetness sensitivity, a liner would be useless.  You definitely wouldn't need an insert, as the prefold acts as the absorbent portion of the diaper.  You might need doublers if you plan to use prefolds overnight, but probably not until LO is a little older and sleeping longer stretches.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question. No worries.  Congrats.
