Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Almost 11 months and no interest in food, water or juice

Does this sound normal? My little guy very recently got 4 bottom teeth. We've always given him 100% pureed food - not a hint of texture.
We've very recently starting introducing food with lumps and he gags and chokes. It stresses me so much  to watch him. We've tried a few times and stopped as I can't bear to see that awful gag and choking.
He also has zero interest in drinking water or apple or white grape juices... cries and wants his formula.

Re: Almost 11 months and no interest in food, water or juice

  • My DD is that way too. She will be 10 months next week and has little interest in any food of any kind. i will put some puffs on her high chair and she might eat two. taking it day by day and hoping she becomes the foodie like myself. :)

  • When my baby starts gagging (even with smashed banana between my fingers) I always exaggerate the chewing motion.  Usually he brings it back and starts trying to "chew" with his gums.  If he's still having a hard time, i give him water or his bottle.  I think this helps him understand "i need to swallow my food before i take a drink".  That's my thought anyway.  Also, my pedi said to skip Stage 3 foods, b/c they do nothing but confuse him right now.  Either give him puree's that he can easily swallow, or give him a small piece of food to chew.
  • That will happen a lot for a couple months or so. My son would gag and spit up a lot when starting foods with more texture. Gagging, coughing, and puking is all normal with starting new foods. Just keep offering it even if he  doesn't actually eat it for awhile. Eating with him helps too. Even if he keeps refusing his own food, watching you eat meals will help him learn and he'll eventually want to try it too.
  • Really like "spit out and retry" analogy and the whole post from @somerandomchick :D
For me, not rushing and constantly watching over myself to take it slowly have always been the biggest challenges during the mealtimes

  • My first DD ate so well. She was tiny and slow to gain weight. We started puree at 4 months with her and by 7 months she ate pretty well. Our 11 month old is a completely different story. She isn't even interested in the puree. The only thing I have found that she will eat are the gerber pouches. She gobbles those things down. She plays with foods like spaghetti/pastas. She likes bananas but they have to be smashed really well. She is also a gagger. It really isn't anything to stress about though. I don't worry because I know that when I switch to whole milk next month she will get hungry. Food will be her bestie then!
  • I agree with others that gagging and choking sounds are normal. It is so hard to see and scary, but you have to trust that your baby will figure it out if you trust her body to do its thing.
