Food poisoning

So I know the best answer is "call your doctor," but that's a little challenging, so I wanted to check here.

I got food poisoning last night. We're in Mexico, and I had buffet food for breakfast and lunch and then French food for dinner. I had a bite of DH's salmon tartare, so that could be it, but he just got diarrhea, so I don't know. I woke up at 1am with a stomachache and then threw up. It was not the same as the normal pregnancy nausea/vomiting that I've had before. Anyway, I felt better afterwards, and I feel fine now. I can still feel the baby moving.

I did some reading online, and it seems like some kinds of food poisoning are dangerous for the baby. How do I know? Should I go somewhere to get checked? Just make sure I'm drinking plenty of water? Thanks!

  • Thanks, @elleswarth! I've been to Mexico a few times before, so I've been drinking bottled water and haven't eaten any raw fruits or veggies except for peeled, cut things like watermelon and grapefruit. The salmon tartare was kind of dumb of me to try, so I'll be more careful about raw things. Thanks again.

Staying hydrated is your biggest battle - listeria is really the primary food-borne pathogen that causes issues with fetuses, and I believe that's usually earlier in pregnancy. For most food related issues, the primary concern is keeping you hydrated. If you can't keep any liquids down and start to worry about dehydration, head to a clinic to get fluids. Mexican medicine, especially around the resort areas and D.F., is actually very good. And there's usually at least a few English speakers available to translate - many doctors speak English.

  • I don't have any advice, but I'm glad you feel better and hope you don't get sick like that again!

  • I hope you feel better soon! Maybe avoid the sun a bit today until you are feeling 100% and are fully hydrated. That beautiful Mexico sun can take it out of you when you're already not feeling well.
  • It doesn't sound much like food poisoning if you only threw up once and feel better.... Carefully drink and eat a lot of water, but if that is the only problem you have then you are fine. If you start to have severe vomiting/diarrhea then I would try and see a doctor.

I generally assume that if I feel fine again and baby is moving like normal, everything is okay.

A couple of times during this pregnancy, I had very strong vomiting and diarrhea, but as soon as everything was empty, it was fine. Unpleasant but brief.
    This...exactly.

I'm so sorry that you were sick but hopefully it passes quickly and it's just that one time.  Try to be careful of what you eat today - try to stick to blander foods - and drink plenty of water.

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • I thought I had food poisoning a few weeks ago.  Woke up at 5am and had vomiting and diarrhea.  I kept thinking it was food poisoning until it happened again 2 weeks later.  Turns out it was some kind of acid reflux issue.  My doctor told me to take zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid (famotidine) twice a day (both are category B in all trimesters).  At least for right now, that seems to be helping.  I would have never thought it was caused by reflux, but once I took the pepcid it made me feel a ton better.

Anyway, that aside....are you able to call your OB office back home?  They might be able to tell you the best way to proceed.
  • O man! damn mexican resort food! been there! Hope you continue to feel better and like other pp's said HYDRATE :) I'd call the OB when you are able to just to check with them (or ask them for e-mail address so they can respond to you when they have time?)  Try to enjoy yourself!
  • Thanks, everyone! I felt a little tired today but no more vomiting, so that's good. I just thought it was food poisoning because I woke up in the MOTN feeling awful, and it was more projectile than when I've been sick previously in my pregnancy. Anyway, I'm glad it's gone. We're going home tomorrow ( :( ), so I'll call my doctor once we're back just in case he has any other tests or precautions for me. Thanks again!
  • Yuck! I've had my fair share of bad reactions to food after living in the DR, no fun at all! Glad you're feeling better and hope you can enjoy the end of your vacation!

  • Sorry I missed this earlier!  But glad to read you're doing a bit better.  I hope it's a one time thing and you can enjoy the rest of your time away.

  • I would avoid buffets if possible because the food can get contaminated from other people and from sitting out for hours. Eat bread/crackers and drink lots of bottled water to flush out your system.
