Winter Time Sleeping

Hello Ladies, looking for some advice. I live in Southern California where it gets cold at night but not so cold that it is necessary to sleep with a heater on the whole winter. Also, my family is very sensitive to sleeping with heaters. (we wake up with horrible stuffy noses and headaches).

Since it is unsafe to but blankets in DD's crib, how do you keep LO warm at night? The past couple nights I have brought her over to my bed since I go and feel her hands and forehead and she feels a bit cold. Any advice?

Re: Winter Time Sleeping

  • We got a couple fleece sleep sacks from Carter's, so we will put LO in a onesie then the sleep sack over it. His hands just get cold, there is no way around it, but the rest of him is warm.

We are supposed to break our record low temps tonight and tomorrow so now I need more suggestions too as we are not used to such cold temps.

  • @ksyknelvr73 are the sleep sacks much thicker than the fleece PJ's? I've never really looked at them. thanks!

No, they are about the same. But I like that I can layer things under them. I put pants and socks on LO also if it gets extra chilly.

ETA: I am in GA so we don't get the crazy bitter cold winters either. Well, except for tomorrow apparently as we prepare to break the records for low temps here. Haha.

  • I layer a cotton sleeper under 2 piece fleece pjs. DS is growing like a weed and I couldn't keep up with one piece sleepers and winter has only just begun. He has a fleece blanket he sleeps with. His hands are cold but his body is always warm. He won't keep his hands under the blanket.
  • DD sleeps in fleece footed pajamas and her zipadee zip. They market it as a swaddle transition but it's really just a sleep sack with arms. I like it a lot. The hands are covered so they don't get cold.

  • Also in SoCal. We do cotton footsie pajamas and either a cotton or fleece sleep sack. I also recommend the Vornado heater (see amazon). Very quiet and work great in kids rooms. I doubt you would have the same health issues with it.

  • We don't run our heater during winter, but normally I'll put him in socks, pants, long sleeved onesie. And a hat if it is colder than that. If i was concerned that he needed more than that, I'd throw him in a sleep sack.

The house doesn't get colder than 64. (Oh, we live in Arizona.)

  • I'm a big fan of the halo fleece sleep sack. DD is usually in that and cotton or fleece footed pajamas. We have our house set to 64 right now.

  • DS moves around a lot in his sleep and hates his a&a sleep sack. The halo early walkers sleep sack is perfect for him. Plus it's safer for when he's standing in the crib staring at me at 2:30am.

  • We do a onesie, socks, and cotton footie pajamas with a halo sleep sack. Our heat is at 66 at night. Her feet stay much warmer in the sleep sack than fleece pajamas -- like how mittens are warmer than gloves.

@Haleighkay90‌ , we are also on the panhandle. Right now DD just sleeps in a fleece footie pajama, sometimes with socks sometimes without depending. But for whatever reason her room doesn't heat up much so I just leave her door open about a foot to make sure she gets some warm air. Can't keep mittens on her even if I glued them, so her hands are mostly a bit chilly when I go to pick her up.

  • We do fleece footsie pjs and either a fleece sleep sack or 2.5 tog quilted sleep sack. Our heat is set to 66F overnight. His hands always feel cold at night but it doesn't seem to bother him.
  • Lived in San Diego when DS was an infant and had the same issue. Sleep sacks (there are cotton and fleece options) or layers are the answer.

  • For those of you who said your LO's had cold hands, I found that putting socks on their hands help.

DD always seems to get them off when I've tried that :-/

  • Thank you everyone!  It looks like the sleep sack is the way to go. @caballo718 I really like the one you suggested. Thanks !!

  • We also do fleece sleep sacks. I live in SD so it gets pretty cold. We have our heat on to 70-72 at night, but our bedroom stays pretty chilly so we actually got a space heater for it which helps a lot. I put DS in a footie sleeper with the sleep sack over it. If the pjs are thinner I use a Carters fleece sleep slack, if they are heavier or it's not as cold out I use a Halo cotton sleep sack. Sometimes his hands get chilly but it has been working for us.
  • I live in Southern MN, and DD has been in either cotton or fleece footie pjs.  It just depends on grab for that night.  Our house is set at about 66-68, but probably a little cooler (Its a 100 year old house, with plaster walls and very little insulation in the walls).  Her hands and feet are sometimes cool when she wakes up, but I don't think it bothers her.  Her chest and back are always warm, so I know she's comfortable.
