More Thanksgiving food talk

I was thinking about how Holiday dinners vary so much by region. Thanksgiving dinner growing up in PA was pretty much exactly all the foods listed in the other poll.

Then I moved to VA and Thanksgiving meal is so sad. I miss all the foods I used to eat. Usually they fix the normal Turkey (T-day) or Ham (Christmas) but then the sides are like coleslaw, mac and cheese, potato salad, mashed potatoes, plain corn or green beans, and rolls. No stuffing (and if we do have it, it is called dressing) no green bean casserole, no cranberry sauce. And sometimes even no pumpkin pie!

So, what are your Thanksgiving menus like?

Re: More Thanksgiving food talk

  • What VA do you live in?! ;) I'm in VA and I call my stuffing stuffing and nothing is served plain. Hehe

    Here's this year's menu:

    Turkey
    Gravy
    Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes (don't remember dish name, but they're mashed and have pecans, cinnamon, and brown sugar mixed in and w/marshmallows on top)
Stuffing (both inside and outside turkey)
Green bean casserole (special recipe - no onions, but cheese and water chestnuts instead)
    Rolls
Cranberry sauce (both jellied canned and homemade from scratch)
    Maybe another veg
    Pumpkin pie
    Pecan pie
    Apple pie

  • I'm from mid west... But now live on west coast. Menu is Midwest though.

    We do:
    Turkey
    Mashed potatoes
    Gravy
    Yams/ sweet potatoes
Stuffing/dressing ( I don't cook it in the turkey so I suppose technically it's dressing , but we still call it stuffing )
Homemade noodles made with turkey stock or chicken broth ( this is a family recipe but not a Midwest dish technically)
    Dinner rolls
Creamed peas or green bean dish
    Corn dish
    Cranberry sauce
Pumpkin pie with real whipped cream

Im in central VA. I forgot about the sweet potatoes-especially with brown sugar and pecans.
  • Sounds like a thanksgiving bbq menu

I know. Its the saddest menu ever. I will be going to PA for Thanksgiving this year tho buy Christmas here. And the Christmas menu is basically the same.
  • I'm in PA (near Pittsburgh) so my thanksgiving is probably similar to yours, @Raesofsunshine1‌. What part of PA is home for you?

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn, cranberry sauce, yams, cottage cheese w/pineapple, rolls, pumpkin pie, pecan pie. I feel like I'm missing something, but maybe not. I would be content with the stuffing, mashed potatoes, & cranberry sauce. Bring on the carbs!

  • We participate in a pot luck thanksgiving with several other families. So, it ends up with a random assortment of food, but here is what shows up most years:
    Turkey
    Ham
    Sausage dressing
    Green beans
    Sweet potatos
    Mashed potatos
    Veggie pot pie
    Black beans
    Can of cranberries
    Desserts

I'm in VA too and our menu is very similar to this! Although we actually do thanksgiving with DH's family in MD (all of us are in the DC suburbs). I grew up in the Midwest and haven't found the menu to be very different out here. The only somewhat weird thing is that we sometimes have oysters in the stuffing. We would never see that in the Midwest :)

  • Ok so my inlaws here are just weird.
  • All kinds of stuffing and dressing is called stuffing in our family and area. I can't say I've ever heard anyone say dressing unless it's salad dressing!

  • I didnt know there were more VA lady's here! :)
  • You lady's have solved a mystery for me. The only dressing I had ever heard of is salad but my inlaws make "oyster dressing" for thanksgiving. I could never figure out why they called it that! I didn't know this was a thing!!

  • I read somewhere to wear your maternity pants for the holidays and then you have plenty of room to eat whatever you want without your pants getting too tight. Of course, some of us may be tired of wearing those clothes. I know mine are already packed away.
