When I first started posting here I loved the name Mina and H hated it. I brought it up again tonight after he mentioned Mia which is great but too popular for me. What do you all think of Mina?

Nms at all but it's a legitimate name.
Care to elaborate on that? I am just trying to get others honest opinions because it isn't a name I have ever heard actually used before.

I used to love Nina but we currently have a student who has full blown ruined the name for us. I try to not let that happen and she graduates this year but we are with her so often I don't think we will ever get past it.

  • I think it is lovely! I voted "love it". I have known someone with this name and it suited her well. I think it can stand alone or as a nn for Wilhelmina or Minerva. The one I knew had it as a given name.

  • I don't like it, I think it can easily be teased at school. Eenie meanie minie moe and just straight up Meanie as a NN.
Thanks for pointing that out. I was "Alyssa Pissa" growing up and was bullied constantly from 2nd grade to 5th and then again from 10-12th grade. Kids will make a fun of anything they choose to so I am not worried to much about the Mina/Meanie thing.

Just ok for me because I have a student who ruined Mina for me.

While I do see your point... The very first thing I hear for Mina is "mean." Sorry. I think I could be okay with it as a nn, as that offers alternatives. But on its own... I want to like it, but just don't.

  • I love it. If this baby is a girl it most likely will be named Mia Victoria
  • I named my dog Mina. Almost everyone misunderstands and thinks it's Nina, so be prepared to correct everyone, all the time. I'd also like to point out that it's technically a nn for Wilhelmina, not generally a given name.

  • I originally voted "meh," but I have to say, I'm really coming around to it. It's very sweet. I think I would like it better as a nn choice as well, but I wouldn't side-eye it as a stand alone. I definitely like it better than Mia.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • It's an ok name, but I like Mia much, much better.

  • Too much emphasis on mean for me. All I hear is MEAN-uh (mean in a bratty five year olds annoyed voice, if that makes sense. Ha).
I like Mia, mila and Myla so much more.
  • As an alternative, I know a baby Minna (men-uh, from one of the Baltics). I think it's a little softer than Mina and doesn't include the "mean " syllable.
  • SS I lovelovelove it as a NN for Wilhelmina!!!

I instantly thought of Dracula too! I love the name, it's so sweet. Way better than Mia for sure!

  • Is it pronounced ME-na or MY-na or MIN-na? I have an aunt Minna. I think the spelling will have people mispronouncing her name.

  • Love Mina. I have a gorgeous, exotic, brilliant friend with the name.
  • When I was really little, my aunt had a best friend named Mina (and she was awesome!). I'm pretty sure it was her nickname, I'm not sure of her actual name since everyone called her that. I love the name, it's sweet and at least for me, it reminds me of a cool lady.
  • I have a student whose name is Mina but he is a boy. I think it's a fairly common Egyptian / Arabic name for a boy

  • I used to call my grandma Mina when I was too little to be able to say Grandma.  So...that's the only association I have.  Not terrible, but I can't say I like it much.
