How to announce pregnancy at work?

I will be 14 week on Wednesdat and I plan on telling my boss something this week that I'm expecting. It's always awkward when I talk to him about things, so I just don't know how to tell him that I'm expecting, not that he will be mad or anything, I just find it weird talking to him. He always goes off in deep end about other stuff and end up talking for 20-30 mins. Any ideas on how to tell boss and coworkers?

Re: How to announce pregnancy at work?

  • Run in, yell, "I'M PREGNANT!" Run out.

But really, I guess it depends on the type of work environment you're in and the relationship you have with your boss. Would an email be appropriate for you guys? That way you can avoid the long winded conversation, but can also offer to have a face to face meeting if he feels there's things that need to be discussed in detail.

  • My boss is the same way. I just stumbled over my words and told him "So..... Uh.... In May we are having a baby... so there's that..." You would think I could have said it better considering I have a communications degree, but nope. Oh well. He knows.

2 of my other co-workers no and everyone else can figure it out when I get bigger.
  • Definitely depends on your work environment.  When I was pregnant last time I stressed out a lot about telling and figuring out the correct order to tell people in because my job was really hierarchical and stuff like that mattered.  I told as many of my bosses (at the time I technically had 5) as I could in person and I called the one who was out of the office for business travel.  I walked in, asked if they had a few minutes to talk, closed the door, sat down and just said, "I just want to let you know that I am expecting and I am due in late January."  I was worried about reactions but everyone was really happy for me and took the news very well.  I think it's like a band-aid.  You stress out about it and then you just pull it off and do it.

This time, I plan to tell my one boss later this week.  I'm sure she'll be happy for me but I am a little nervous still because I've only been at this job for a little under a year.

  • In terms of my coworkers, I started a new job a few months ago and I know a few have been struggling with infertility so I don't feel comfortable announcing it in anyway...word will get around once it's on Facebook since I'm friends with a few coworkers.

I plan on emailing my bosses and asking to meet about it when I'm a bit further (16-20 weeks)

  • I just said hey next week I have a doctors appt bc I am pregnant.  Simple as that.
  • With our first, I brought in pink/blue cupcakes and then wrote a note that said "pink or blue, pink or blue, __husband's name__ and I are expecting  in just 25 weeks I am due!"

This time around, I sent out an email with my daughters picture and then just said we had some exciting news to share that my husband and I were expecting our 2nd child.   I also saw somewhere else that someone brought in donuts for their co-workers and then wrote a note like "eat up everyone! My mom can't be the only one with a belly :)  Baby Your Last Name

My office is all about sweets so thought that was cute just too lazy to get them for everyone!
  • I pulled my boss into an office, and just said "exciting news -- my husband and I are expecting!". He was very excited for me. We talked about the baby for maybe 5 minutes and then we left. He told his boss, and then I told a couple of co-workers. I slowly just let the office chat/gossip spread and now everyone knows. I only told maybe a handful of people personally though.

  • My boss was one of the first people that knew about my pregnancy. Since going through IVF I had to be up front with her from the beginning. With all those DR visits I was coming in late or leaving early for weeks, along with time off I needed for the ER and ET. In a way this made it easier for me. She was actually happy for me since she new I had been dealing with infertility for some time.

  • My new boss who took over in September found out when I ran out of a staff meeting to barf. I almost got in big trouble for it. Everyone thought I was pissed about the topic at the meeting. I finally had to tell him. Very few know...I mean I don't want to just go to other departments and say hey I'm pregnant. I work with then but not on a daily consistent basis. It's more like we work for the same company but my job doesn't impact theirs and vice versa. Do I have to tell them?
