Papilloma?

So, I'm 14 weeks pp and I BF only for the first week. Today I noticed blood coming from one duct on my right nipple. I called the OB thinking this was a normal pp thing but I just wanted to make sure, and she tells me it's not normal and she wants to see me Monday.

Now I'm really nervous. She mentioned it could be a papilloma. Anyone have any similar experience? :-(

  • Yes, I have/had interductal papalloma. I had a lump in my breast about five years ago. They ended up doing a lumpectomy and in addition to the lump I had interductal papalloma. It's just benign. They removed it along with the ducts.

My breast doctor said I have dense breast tissue and will probably have more. Since my tissue is so dense self checks are very important - my OB could barely feel the lump.

  • Thanks for the well wishes, everyone.  I saw the OB today.  He basically just checked that there in fact was blood coming out (which there still was) and gave me some referrals.

I get a mammogram and sonogram on Thursday.

I have a consult with the breast surgeon at the cancer center in December.

That is a freaky sentence to have to write.  I'm trying not to let it freak me out, but, I won't lie, it does.

@abnelsen22 Thanks for sharing your experience.  Was it a complicated procedure to remove the papilloma and the ducts?  Were you able to breastfeed after (are there ducts left)?  I know all cases are different, but, any advice will help me, as I like to know what's going on, or what could happen, even if it's scary.

I'm really nervous about how this is going to affect my job (I teach elementary school) because I've used up all of my leave for the baby.  I guess I'll just have to figure it out.  Luckily I have the most supportive principal, so I feel very lucky for that.

I also have the best husband....just an example - today I was driving to my appointment (He was at work and couldn't come along) and I was listening to Spotify in my car.  We share an account, so we can see when the other is listening.  He noticed I was listening, and he switched the song to Monty Python's Bright Side of Life, which made me laugh hysterically.  :-)

  • After the initial ultrasound, they determined it wasn't a cyst. So, then they did a biopsy. That wasn't very invasive. They just did an ultrasound and used a large guage needle. They numbed me up and I didn't feel anything. It was weird to watch. I went to work right after - no down time. Just ice and ibuprofen.

The results of that were inconclusive, so they wanted to do a lumpectomy. She told me they usually cut around your nipple to reduce the appearance of scars, but mine was up higher, so I have about a two inch scar on my breast.

Once they opened me up they found not only the lump, but the interductal papalloma. She removed those ducts, but I still have a lot of ducts left. I had the surgery on a Friday and was back at work on Monday.

I'm not much help with breast feeding because I wasn't allowed to. I did leak a tiny bit from each breast. But my prolactin levels were messed up from my brain tumor. So who knows what would have happened.

My surgeon was great and I felt very at ease during the whole ordeal. Obviously mine was benign. I hope yours is too and all this worry will be able to go away. It is stressful at the time for sure.
