Cold Weather Gear questions

So winter is here early. There's snow on the ground. This is unheard of in Tulsa, so I'm unprepared.

CBH will not wear a hat or gloves. He just rips them right off, over and over again. He has a warm coat with a hood, but it is puffy and therefore he's not supposed to wear it in the carseat, right? But the only way I can cover his head is with a hoodie. He has a thinner coat that is warm, but no hood.

I guess I need a thin, warm coat with a hood on it. I also experimented with putting a blanket on him in the car, which I think is good too and I can keep doing.

His head and hands are really stressing me out though. He is moving to the toddler class next week and they take the kids outside almost every day, even in the cold.

Does anyone have hat or glove tips? or a warm coat with hood they like?

Re: Cold Weather Gear questions

  • It's so funny you posted this, I texted @Smilz4782‌ earlier because I didn't even know if they made gloves for kids this small!

We have a fleece jacket that reminds me of North Face, if she was going to be outside more than from the car to the house, I'd put her in something heavier. I do cover her with a lightweight blanket in the car as well.

I found a cute knit cap and mittens at Buy Buy Baby this afternoon. I've been pleasantly surprised that she kept them on, so I may have the rare child who will leave them on for the necessary amount of time. I did notice when I left the mittens on her during a drive, she chewed on the thumb, so I think I'll have to take them off for rides.

  • So it sounds like a lot of people are not doing a coat in the car, which leads me to ask if this is what you do- do you wear a coat to the car and take it off then place them in the car? We haven't had cold enough weather for these questions yet, but tomorrow's forecast says a high of 30! So I guess it's time to find out.

Also- I haven't bought them yet but it's on my to-do list this week- I plan to get the mittens on a string that goes across the back so you don't loose them and they can't easily be removed. My friends with older babies swear by them.

Columbia makes a fleece thing with a hood and fold over flaps to cover hands and feet. We put her in this, strap her in, then put a blanket over her.

Ooh, Columbia has a fleece jacket with hood that I'm liking. And a hat with a chin strap that looks promising. Thanks for the ideas!

Gabe has a coat that comes in two parts - a fleece liner and a waterproof outer shell the fleece zips in to. So far, he's only worn the fleece in the car seat. We have a set of hat/gloves that he will wear from the car into daycare.

He will try to pull the hat off unless I put mittens on him. He can't do anything with the mittens on except cry or clap his hands really loudly. Thankfully he usually chooses to clap his hands rather than cry.

ETA: I also always take the hat/mittens off in the car. He gets hot very quickly in the car seat and will likely overheat. Fleece coat usually stays on.

@mamasoup030‌ I think it was mentioned above but you can buckle them into the car seat then put the coat on backwards over their arms to keep them warm. The coat under the straps keeps the harness so loose in an accident they will easily come out.

It was 20 this morning and I had him in a fleece then put a blanket over and put the coat on when we got out. He the his hat to the ground as I was carrying him uphill over an icy driveway. It wasn't far so I wasn't worried about him getting sick or too cold.

Ok, so a blanket to get to the car, I can do that. I would feel bad carrying her to the car in her clothes while I'm wrapped up and she is so wiggly I can't picture taking on/off the coat at the car before and after a trip. I can't imagine she would keep a coat on backwards - I can picture it flying across the backseat as I watch in the rearview mirror.
  • A little late to this but I've been putting on a thin extra layer on E which is usually a zip up cotton hoodie and then a warm fleece coat with a hat (chin strap works wonders to keep it on) and some mittens that so far she's doing okay keeping on but I'm just waiting for that to change. Then I have a warm blanket in the car. The extra layer and fleece seem to keep her warm enough for the walk to the car since it's in the garage and not too puffy to make the straps loose on the car seat. If she's outside hanging out I put on her big puffy winter coat. I like the idea of putting a blanket over her for the walk to and from the car I had never even thought of that.
