Zofran use in first trimester?

Hey, girls! Hope everyone is doing well today.
So, I went to the ER last week for dehydration/extreme nausea and was prescribed Zofran to take as needed.
At first, it did nothing. But after a couple days, it helped ALOT. I called my obgyn to get a prescription, and the secretary told me that they are no longer prescribing Zofran during pregnancy...I'm confused! Does anyone know why some obgyn's are ceasing to offer this medication to pregnant women? Am I missing something that was in the news, or a new study, or something? I asked the secretary why, and she said she didn't know...
And are there other options for the nausea?

Re: Zofran use in first trimester?

  • I am on Diceglis for my Morning Sickness but everyone i talk to has asked me if I am on Zofran. so im not to sure why your doctor isnt perscribing it anymore. Everything i have read is that is is perfectly safe to take.

  • I haven't heard anything. I don't know what I'd be doing right now without zofran. The other meds didn't even touch the morning sickness.

  • Weird! I would inquire more from your doctor about it. I'm taking Zofran and it has helped me feel a ton better!

  • I haven't done research, but I've seen ladies on here mention about a possible link to birth defects. Again, I haven't looked into it much myself, but I think some doctors are no longer prescribing it. My doctor does and I need it, so I just need to trust in my doctor because I am miserable without it.

Now, my damn insurance, on the other hand, doesn't want to help me out with it.

Yes, there have been some studies recently linking zofran use during pregnancy to possible birth defects (facial clefts, heart defects, and serotonin syndrome, as the main offenders). There are further studies ongoing, but a lot of doctors (mine included) have stopped prescribing it in the meantime.

At the end of the day, you need to do your own research and make the call that's right for you. Hospitalization due to dehydration is also not good for baby. As a pp suggested, Diclegis has made a world of difference for me.

  • A few studies with inconclusive evidence.  Thousands of mommies of taken Zofran safely.  Without this drug I don't know if I would be surviving the first trimester.  I still feel awful, but can at least get to work and be half-human.  Thank god for this drug!
