Re: The Daily Grind (School/Work Check-in)

  • I found out I have to wait until AFTER both Spring and Summer '15 to start my program at school.
LO will be about 6 months old at that point, and it'll give me time to save up/focus on baby

It frustrates me because I want to get done asap, but one step at a time. I don't know how schooling will go if I'm in the middle of raising a >1yo, fighting to get her c/s, and working. I'd love to be able to work nights, do my program in the morning and have 12-shift for baby, me, and homework.

Is this realistic with a 6mo? She might be STTN, right? Any tips/advice?

  • It's hard to gauge when a child will be STTN. My nephew started STTN very early on, DD not until she was 7mo-ish. And she still sometimes cries in the night. I have a friend who is having a hard time getting her 17mo old to STTN, that kid still sleeps like a newborn.

All I've got going on really is that I have to find a new doctor for DD and I don't know what questions to ask when I call these offices (not quite a good adult yet) and I've given BF some names and he's like "I'd need more info before I could decide on something that important." But like, dude, I gave you their names, you can root around for info, too...

    Ah... Anyway.

Does anyone spend their days listening to podcasts? I'm hooked on Serial and I have only one person to talk to about it and it's a co-worker of mine who I don't particularly like.

  • I know kids are all paced differently, but I would feel better about having my parents on "baby duty" if they don't have to wake up/only wake up once since 3rd shift works best for us. I don't like asking them to take a shift at all, but I remind myself it's all temporary and that they offered if it makes things easier. If LO's not, then I'll probably do morning classes, work afternoons/evenings/weekends, and be at home 2200-classes in a more traditional sense.

Also, how soon after birth did you guys start job hunting/return from maternity leave? I'm going to have about 20 hours a week pt on campus through work study, but I also plan to have an off campus job somewhere I can start in the summer, depending on delivery. (I'm going for a 2 semester phlembotomy program to start, 6 credit hours of class time first semester, 15 for the second. This should be more than doable during the school year.)

I never really got into the podcast scene. What does Serial cover? Link it? :)@20thirteen

  • I had orientation yesterday! Woot.

And b still doesnt sleep through the night.

I returned to school when b was 9 months old and started nannying my nephews when b was a month old.

Be warned daycare can kill you dead depending on where you live.

  • @MinnesotaMomma91 YAY!!! You're a cosmetologist, right? When do you/have you started yet?

I really want to avoid a "daycare," if possible. It's all either really ghetto and sketchy or $1000+ a month. :( My sister's bf (maybe almost fiance, they've been having the talk *squeee*) is a director at a nice preschool. By the time I'd be ready to leave LO there all day/have a job that can support us out on our own, I may get a family discount.

  • @St3wd i have a cosmetology license meaning im legally licensed able to preform hair, nail, and skin services. But im employed as a hairstylist because i fucking despise nails. And i start training tomorrow and train until my license posts(please let it be soon).

Daycare in the metro area i went to school was impossible to get a slot and $400+ dollars a week but where i work its between $100 and $200 per week and there are more slots.

  • Have you looked into subsidized daycare?  The one DD is enrolled in is considered "the cadillac of daycare facilities" and I only pay $340/mo (~$200 the first week and $35/wk for the rest of the month).  If you qualify, which it sounds like you would, you could choose any daycare on a list the county provides and you could pay anywhere between $0 and $400.  Seriously, look into that.  That probably saved my ability to have a job.

Just google "subsidized daycare + [your state]" and the first website that should pop up should be for DHS.  And, trust me, start the process now!  You have to re-apply every 6 months, and they get busy.  I re-applied a couple weeks before the deadline in June and the application literally just went through last week.  That could be just the way my county works, slow as everloving fuck, but still, you should start the process now.  I highly recommend it.

  • I now have that page bookmarked. Thanks for the tip. :)

It'll probably be slow here. Getting my health insurance took 8 full weeks. I filed for it at 11 weeks, was approved at 19, and supplemented with free clinics until I found a doctor who would accept patients after 16 weeks. It was a nightmare when it didn't have to be. STILL waiting on WIC to go through...

I just remembered you asked this question... My job said I could take 6-12 weeks off for ML, however, short term disability for ML was only covered for 6 weeks and didn't even pay for a full day.  I think the way it worked out for me was that 5hrs a day was covered and then the other 2hrs were PTO.  After 6 weeks, I would no longer get short term disability benefits and would have to use PTO for the rest of ML if I chose 12 weeks.  Problem is, I ran out of PTO about a week or two before the 6 weeks was over so I *had* to come back to work after 6 weeks.  I would've loved 12 weeks though.  However, sometimes I wish I lived in another country...:

  • @20Thirteen isnt that outrageous? The united states seems to think we dont need maternity leave, or that our teachers need to be paid, or that people need more then 7 days of pto.

This is what is wrong with the united states.

  • Been a busy week here so I haven't checked in!

Work's good. Work's always good :) We had pie day this week, which is something my company does every year right around Thanksgiving...all you can eat FREE PIE (pumpkin, apple, pecan, sweet potato, cheesecake, sometimes others!) plus free coffee and hot cocoa. It's awesome.

I went back to work when DD was 7 weeks. I didn't want to...I had a c/s and didn't feel recovered yet at that point but I ran out of both PTO and short term disability pay (they insisted I was fine despite the doctors saying otherwise) so back to work I went. Poo.
