Not sure how to word this question about sleep

My little girl will be 3 weeks tomorrow!!! I was just wondering about what you other ladies are doing with the places your baby sleeps.  Since we brought her home she has slept in our room in a rock n play, I was just wondering when is the ideal time to have her start sleeping in her room overnight.  Today I had her take her nap in her room and she actually slept the full 3 hours (of course I went and checked on her what seemed like every 10-20 minutes).  Before today every time we put her in her crib she would wake up 10 minutes later and cry.  She does seem to have a bit of reflux so I put a pillow under her crib mattress which I think is part of the reason she slept for so long.  I figured maybe all this week I will keep having her take naps in her crib and maybe closer to her 5 week mark start having her sleep in her room.  I'm not sure if that is to soon or not so I was just wondering what some of you STM's have done in the past.  How soon is too soon to let LO sleep in their own room?

Also I have looked online about this I was just wanting to get some of opinions on it from you wonderful ladies THANKS!

  • I think this is personal preference. DD was in our room until 6 months and the plan is for DS to do the same. It makes MOTN feedings easier for me.

  • I think we are putting her in her room starting tonight since she is back to her birth weight. Probably won't get any sleep tonight. lol

  • I would like them to stay in our room for as long as possible, but DH would like them to leave sooner. They will probably move in a few weeks. Also the cradle we have is homemade and runs smaller than most so they will outgrow it quickly.

  • We cosleep pretty much until 2 years old. It's what works best for our family'.

I don't think there is any right or wrong way. Just what ever you feel most comfortable with.

Also just because you do something one way this week doesn't mean you can't change your mind later on what works best for you.
  • We struggle with this too.  I am all for putting her in her own room but when I google it everything says 6 months to reduce SIDS risks.  But it also says they suspect it helps (something about the LOs needing to hear you breathing) they have no certain connection, it's speculation.  Sigh.  Parenting is hard.

We will likely switch her after my in-laws come visit next week so we can sleep in the guest room in the room next door for a bit.  That will be close to 8 weeks.  Obviously, if it doesn't work, we'll bring her back into our room in the Rock n Play.

  • With both boys I had them sleep in the bassinet next to our bed for the first 3 months.  Once they started waking only once to nurse at night I would put them back to sleep in their cribs and then once sleeping through the night I would put them in their cribs from the start.  I don't remember when I started having them nap in their cribs; probably about the same time they started only waking one to nurse.
  • THANK YOU LADIES all you comments have been helpful.

  • I need DD to be able to nap in crib when I go back to work and she's at daycare. Since at daycare she has to sleep in a crib.
  • Yes @MissN06 that was our thinking in getting her in her crib around now because she will be in one at daycare.  So far everyday this week she has slept in her crib for a few hours with no issues.  Of course we have a white noise machine and have a pillow under her mattress and I swaddle her but it's baby steps

  • When we left the hospital the doctor told us to have LO sleep in our room till 6 mo.
  • I think it's mostly personal preference. All mine have slept in their own room from day 1 with no issues.

I personally just don't sleep well with the baby in the room with me, especially since this LO is a very noisy sleeper. My other two girls were both light sleepers, so DH and I probably would have woken them up if they were in our room. I have the monitor right next to my bed, but somehow that doesn't disturb me the same way having her in the room does.

Like your ideas, I'm working on short naps currently.
