Switching from Nanny to Daycare

Long story short, our great nanny just moved out of state and we enrolled my 18 month old who has never been to group childcare, in a daycare center. Her first day was last Thursday and she's already gotten sick...and of course I am freaked out about all kinds of daycare illnesses and the fact that she currently LOATHES it there.

Any insight from seasoned daycare mommas into what I can expect over the next few weeks? Will she just be ill constantly? Will she adjust fairly quickly? Will I adjust fairly quickly (because I'm a basket case right now...). ...

Re: Switching from Nanny to Daycare

  • She will be sick a lot, but like TLex said, as she gets older she will have a kick ass immune system. My 6 year old DD hardly ever gets sick. DS is 8 months and loves his center, it just takes time to adjust.

Sickness is normal.. when we moved DS to the bigger center last year vs the small in-home daycare he started in (only had a few other kids), he caught everything under the sun starting right away, and was pretty much perpetually ill with something for the first several months... still catches stuff here and there but it's slowed down a little bit at least.

We'll see how we fare now that we're entering the sick season.  I'm preparing for war.  My absolute worse dreaded fear is the Norovirus (stomach bug) .... that shit is the debol.

  • Like everyone else has said sickness will be had for a while.

Also it will be an adjustment. Your 18 month old doesn't hate going just doesn't like leaving you. Once it becomes more familiar the separation anxiety will lessen some.
