More reflux questions...

Sorry.  We've suspected LO of having silent reflux for a while.  The doctor prescribed Zantac, but then he told me that it can't prevent stomach acid from coming up and just takes away/reduces the pain.  Because my concerns were more about her having a lot of phlegm and gagging, I decided to stop eating dairy to see if I could help to reduce some of those symptoms.  It seemed to be ok for a while (never great), but all of a sudden she has seemingly gotten pretty bad and seems to be in pain now; I also read that reflux can peak around 4 months.  Therefore I decided to start her on the medication today, and I'm glad that I did because our last nursing session was really bad... she was pulling off, arching her back, and screaming, which is not normal at all and made me cry along with her. :(  Of course she hates the Zantac - HATES it.  So my questions are this:

1. Do you have any tricks for helping LO to take the medication?  I'm doing it really slowly and am worried that she's just spitting it all back out.  Why on earth is it peppermint flavored?!?
2. How long did it take for the medicine to help ease some of the pain/fussiness?

Re: More reflux questions...

  • I saw on Pinterest to cut a hole in a Soothie pacifier. Once she is sucking on the pacifier use the medicine dropper or syringe to feed the medicine through the hole you made. Works great for us! Good luck!

  • DD has been on meds since week 5. Made a huge difference. Around week 12 or so she started taking it willingly. In the morning I put the Zantac with her probiotic drops, vitamin d, and a little grip water in a mini Medela tube bottle (for a while with about .5 ounces of breastmilk and now only the meds). She loves the gripe water so I think that helps. In the evening she'll take it straight from the dropper.

She initially started it on a Wednesday night and I noticed a difference come the weekend.

  • Such smart ideas!  I wish the girl would take a pacifier from me... maybe if her dad tries that one.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • Oh and she's started laying flat in the past two weeks without coughing/gurgling! I'm hoping she might be aging out of it a little bit now!

  • I don't have tips, but it's peppermint flavored because peppermint supposedly helps with reflux.
  • Oh this LO... I tried the fishy face first and even rubbing under her chin, but she started gagging on the medicine, hah.  The cranky look was priceless.  AND somehow she managed to still spit it out while making a fish face!

  • We lay LO flat
Syringe goes all the way back into the pocket of his cheek near the back of his tongue
We press it all in at once while blowing up into his nose until he swallows

He hates it but since he doesn't take bottles or pacis, that's what works for us. We don't have much spillage. Our doc told us that even if it were another flavor, the base of the medication is alcohol so it will not taste great no matter what flavor it was. (We joke that it's baby peppermint schnapps)

As for when it starts working- We noticed a difference after the first dosage- in that he didn't scream bloody murder after feeding/burps. He was much less affected by the timing of the dosages by a month in and it works better now. He still has stuff come up into his esophagus, it just doesn't burn him. Lately we have had SO much actual spit up but he's a happy spitter so it's fine. We will take the wins were we can get them.
  • Thanks @herecomesthesun - I will definitely try that method of administering the meds.  I have no idea how much she's getting right now because it seems to all be coming back out.  Nursing is not going well at all today, and I can tell she's in pain... ugh.  I've got to get this medicine in her somehow.

  • I understand, just keep trying different things until something works. Every kid is different in what works.

A lot of what comes back out can be saliva because that stuff makes their glands produce tons of spit.

    That's what I'm hoping!

It's payback... I was the same way taking medicine.
