Christmas Trees

Talk to me about your tree....Is it themed? is it random ornaments?

I'm always torn. I want a pretty themed tree. This year I think I'm going to leave all my childhood ornaments off and make a pretty tree. I'll put DD's few on there. I just want to keep it pretty throughout the years but I guess it's impractical with kids.

Is a second tree somewhere silly? Is it silly to just not put all the ornaments on 1 tree?

What do you do with your tree?

Re: Christmas Trees

  • Growing up we always had 2 trees-- one was pretty and themed, and the other had all of our family ornaments, and usually ugly gold garland and tinsel. I would LOVE to have 2 trees here, and we have the space to accommodate that, but... I never feel like spending the money on themed decorations. I do really LOVE the look of a pretty tree, but I'm starting to come around on the heirloom ornament/mismatched/family tree idea. H's family gets everyone an ornament each Christmas, which is not something my family ever did, so it's a lot more fun to decorate now that I can pull them out of the box and say 'oh this was the first year we were together..' etc.

But... if it were totally up to me and money wasn't an object, I would have 15 trees in my house, each decorated differently!

  • My tree has colour themed balls, but random ornaments too. I find that white lights and a basic colour base will make even a more random tree appear themed.

I always thought my parents tree was crazy, until they got white lights. Now it is mostly red and gold with some random stuff thrown in, and none of the ornaments changed.

  • We have 2 trees because our house has 2 living rooms. The upstairs one is in the front window so I like to match the outside decor. Our window is huge so it would look silly being a totally different look than the outside. So the upstairs is all creams, silver and gold. Lots of sparkle.

The downstairs tree is the fun tree with lime green, turquoise and silver. It's also where we put our fun ornaments. I love having 2 trees. It's a bit more work but worth it!

  • I have all my ornaments and there are so many memories associated with them but I guess I don't feel the tree is pretty. Which is just something I'd like. I'm really torn. I thought maybe it would be cute to do little trees in the kids room eventually but I feel like a stuck up mom who won't allow her kid's ornaments on her tree.

I bought some ornaments to craft. Twine around glass ornaments. Pinecones with ribbons. Also going to make cinnamon ornaments. I have burlap to make bows with.
  • We have a fun family friendly tree. It is all our ornaments and the bottom has some little stuffed christmas/ woodland animals for the kids to move around. It is a pre-lit with white lights. I love it.

Here is a blurry picture of it

  • I LOVE Christmas and want to have five trees some day  :D

we currently have two.  one is upstairs on the landing and can be seen in the big picture window (its three big windows wide.  Its all white, gold and silver.  The tree that is in the window is our old family room tree from our townhouse so its not pre-lit and its five foot tall.  I convinced DH we needed two trees when we moved into this house and wore him down enough that he found a black Friday deal on a pre-lit taller tree for our family room (we have nine foot ceilings)  I had some of the ornaments from the original tree and bought some more for pretty cheap at target to just fill it the first year.  after that i picked up more on clearance after Christmas and the tree is full.  I think the most expensive thing was the skit at 30 bucks

Our downstairs tree is the family tree which is all the family ornaments.  Every year since we've been married I've bought DH an ornament for Christmas so we have those but other ones we've bought.  Its a Hodge podge of our personalities but its great.  I think once DS starts making and collecting his own it will begin to really grow!

eventually i would like to expand to some more themed trees, maybe a Penn State or Pennsylvania themed sports teams if we ever finish the basement, a santa clause one.  oh the posibilities :)

We get a very large, real tree. I picked colors (red and silver) and that's what all of the lights, ribbons and filler ornaments are. Then we put all of the special ornaments on with those. ETA: Also, DH insists on no plastic ornaments. Glass, metal, wood, fabric are all ok, but no plastic.
  • A fabulous gay man once told me white lights outside, colored lights inside on the tree.  We do a real tree with all ornaments we own in the living room with colored lights.

I have a tall skinny fake tree I want to put in my bedroom with colored lights because I sleep so well with colored lights in the room.

  • We will someday have a second tree downstairs as it was a tradition DH loved. For now we have a prelit tree that ca switch between colored and white lights we put all our special ornaments on that tree. We also have a tabletop tree that we put in the kitchen or master bedroom that is only pretty stuff.

  • We do a large, real tree with white lights and a hodgepodge of ornaments. I'd love to have a second themed tree at some point . Maybe next year.

  • Growing up we always got real trees, but put our family ornaments on- the heirloom ones right next to the ones painted by 3 year-olds.

I'm not put together enough to come up with a themed tree every year, so we'll also just put all of our ornaments on one.  Our current tree is fake, and pre-lit, but good quality and does the trick.  When the girls are a bit older, we'll probably switch to real trees.
  • I think this may be the year we get a second small tree or even a little fake one for the family room so DH can put on all his tacky ornaments from growing up and I can still have a pretty, classy tree in the foyer.  Because WTF, MIL, did you need to get him a Star Trek ornament EVERY damn year?  I don't necessarily want themed, but I would like something that isn't cornball.

I also love white lights on trees but my grandparents always did these awesome old-school colored lights...I'd like to do a small tree with those.

  • We have a large pre-lit 1/2 tree. It has been red and gold since 1999. We will be doing a second this year that is blue and silver. There are a few ornaments that we have collected over the years but they are only a few and never get noticed so they just get thrown in. Growing up we never had a themed tree and I always wanted one so this year I will have 2.

  • We always do real. I'm just not sure where to put a second tree. Up stairs is just G and the basement is pretty much just DH's area. People will be down there on Christmas but it would be tight with a tree. All my ornaments are whinnie the pooh, mice and precious moment. I love them but I don't love the tree. Maybe I can get a fake tree for our entrance way.
  • I hate taking down Christmas decorations so I'm pretty sure I will always be a one tree girl.

Ours is not themed.  We always get a real tree. Some ornaments are from when I was a kid. Some are from places I've traveled to. I started the habit of buying an ornaments as souvenirs about 8 or so years ago. Others are fancy bulbs I've gotten as gifts from family.

I put an angel on top & ribbon as garland. I have small colored lights & 2 strands of vintage fluorescent lights that have been passed down from my grandma, to my dad, and then to me.

eta- we also have about 20 NY Giants ornaments that people just love to give to MH as gifts. While I do enjoy the NY Giants, the ornaments are so tacky! Those get hung in the back :)

  • We bought a tree for about $50 our first Christmas together. It is prelit with white lights. Last year, I added colored twinkle lights. It started with blue and silver, because that was the easiest way to start it. Then I got a cute set of 12 snowman ornaments. I also got all of my ornaments from my mom plus some of my grandma's handpainted antique ornaments. My mom buys each of us an ornament every year. I love our tree. I may upgrade the actual tree at some point. DH had a themed tree growing up and it wasn't ever really a family thing decorating it and that makes me sad.

We have one tree and it's not themed, unless Christmas itself counts as a theme, lol. We have everything from my childhood ornaments to stuff we've gotten the kids to ones DH and I bought for each other. Some are from trips, some were gifts. It's totally random, and looks like a tree full of little toys. I love the mishmash, and have no idea where we'd even put a second tree.

ETA: We do a real tree. It's become a tradition to go to a local farm to cut it down.
