STM Prep questions

Are you doing classes to prepare for the baby/delivery? I have a BTDT attitude, but I'm wondering if I should be doing something to prepare for this one's arrival.

Also, any tips (before I muster the energy to read a book) on preparing our 2.5 year old for a sibling?

TIA

Re: STM Prep questions

  • I'm planning on taking some classes.  My last labor was TERRIBLE.  I'm using a midwife this time and plan to go a completely different route (as much as safely possible).
  • Loading the player...
  • I would try to include your other child in with the planning, picking stuff out. Read stories to baby. Help them feel included, then when baby does come, they can be a helper. That's what I've done with my other kids and they're pretty excited.
  • And for my second, I did take a birthing class just cause it was my DH's first and wanted to prepare him. But I felt that I didn't learn much that I didn't already know.
  • I'm not taking any classes but I am reading a book called secrets of the baby whisperer for toddlers.
  • I'm not planning on taking any classes. Like PP mentioned we plan to include our DD in preparing things like the nursery so she knows what is going on. We got her a book called I'm a big sister, and I read it to her most days and then point to my belly and tell her her brother is in there. I also have her talk to the baby. She is only 20 months so she isn't saying a lot right now but she tells the baby hello, that she loves him and even says "I'm your big sissy!" when prompted. I know nothing is really going to prepare her for this new little boy that will be invading  her life but I am trying to do what I can.

  • I didn't take any classes with my first so I know I won't with my second.
  • I may take a breastfeeding class since I failed last time. It it helps great, if not, no big deal.

I'm not sure how to prep  my 2 year old for this. Not sure there is a way. It will be a shock no matter what I am sure.
  • I'm going to do a birthing class and breastfeeding class. I had my daughter 5 years ago and I remember I didn't know how to breathe and relax. I tensed up and held my breath. I also wasn't able to breastfeed longer than 2-3 weeks with her.

  • This is number 4 for me however my "babies" are 8! so it FEELS like number 1...I'm going to take SOME classes just to "brush up" plus this is a VBAC for me so thats new too.

  • No classes here.  I'm of the "do what the L&D nurses tell you to do" school of thought.  I took a basic class last time, and I am fairly certain I will be induced early again (mild pre-e last time), which means plenty of time for the epi.

  • We will tour the hospital, and maybe take a CPR class. We are picking up a few books to read to our son before the new baby comes.

  • I didn't do any classes for #2.  All I really did was buy fresh bottles and pump parts (my old ones got icky in storage).

DD was only 20m when #2 came so we didn't really do much to prepare her...she had a baby doll to play with, but didn't care about the baby other than trying to get in the swing and bouncy seat all over again.

For #3, since I am going to try for a non-medicated delivery (#1 & #2 were HR inductions, but I am not HR for #3) I will take a class in coping strategies.  We will get big bro/big sis books for #1 & #2 to prepare them.  We are also moving #1 and #2 to the "big kid room" so the baby can have the nursery.

  • I want to attempt to actually labor (I got my epidural before they started the pitocin with my induction last time) so I want to take the not-one-day birthing class.

I have a friend who in the process of getting her lactation consultant certification so I think I"m good there.

Yeah talking to my 2 year old won't make a bit of difference. He doesn't have that level of comprehension yet. So I know it'll be a big adjustment for him (and us!) but we'll all figure it out as we go! @redneckmomma25‌ I'm not sure what you mean by "failed" at breastfeeding, but I hope you're not beating yourself up if it just didn't work out!!
I do still carry some guilt over it 2 years later. I just feel like I didn't try or do enough. I know it's mostly mom guilt. DD is absolutely healthy as can be. 1 sick visit in 2 years. It's just something I think I need to do for myself.

How's the book? Would you recommend it?

We might sign up for a hypno-birthing class. I had a friend who went through it and loved it, so I figure what the heck. My last pregnancy was still recent enough that I feel like I have a good handle on how everything else and I still have all my books and handouts sitting in my son's closet if i wanted to look back.

I won't be preparing my son for a sibling, at he will be 20 months when baby comes home, so his understanding of the situation will be minimal.

@redneckmomma I'm confident that you didn't fail at breastfeeding. It just wasn't right for you and your daughter at the time. Like you said she is healthy, and beautiful and in no way has a mother who failed!!!
  • I definetly want to take a Breasfeeding class this time!  I had a REALLY hard time BFing with my son, I think mainly because people told me I had to give him formula until my milk came in two days later...I think this put us off on the wrong foot right from the start.  I am determined to get it right this time!

  • I'm with some of the other ladies and I'll go to another breastfeeding class.  I don't feel that I was fully informed with DD and was only able to do it for about a month before I gave up.  I want to breastfeed for longer this time around if possible.

As far as prepping my 2.5 year old, I am trusting Daniel Tiger to take care of it for me. The new baby episodes are great and DS loves them. He walks around singing the song about a baby making things different. He also knows baby sister came from the mommy's belly.
