do wet diapers indicate nb is fed enough

Hi,

My newborn is 3 days today and as a first time mom I am, predictably, worrying about her feeding. Today is our first day home from the hospital. She'll nurse for maybe ten minutes, most recently just two minutes, before falling asleep. However, she is hitting all of her wet and dirty diaper milestones. I wish that I could tell for sure whether she is "getting enough" during feedings. Even though she had fed 7 times today (our "day" starts at 6.30), a two-minute feeding doesn't seem right.

I have read on kellymom about excessively sleepy babies and am trying to work those solutions in.

Can anybody relate to me, share her experience?

Thanks
Stephanie

  • Congratulations!  It sounds like your LO has great diapers but I agree with PP that the number of nursing sessions seem a little low.  Make sure you feed on demand but at least every 2-3 hours until she gets back to her birth weight.  My newborn never seemed to sleep unless I was trying to feed him.  There are tons of tips you can try but we always changed his diaper before his feedings and we did lots of skin on skin time.  Even though he would still fall asleep while nursing, being so close helped him eat really frequently.
  • I agree with PPs. I also would change my little guys diaper before I would feed him. He usually did good with his nursing during the day, but would quickly fall asleep during night feedings. Changing his diaper did seem to help allot. I occasionally would undress him to help wake him up as well.
  • My DD wasn't getting enough from bfing. She was making the number of wets and dirty diapers but she was also always on the boob or crying. She would often fall asleep nursing but then would wake up crying for more. Those were my clues that she wasn't getting enough. She was generally just unhappy most of the time. If you have a generally happy baby then I wouldn't worry too much.

  • A little tip I didn't understand when starting out. When they say 2-3 hours it means start I one session to the start of the next. Not 2-3 hours after LO finishes nursing. I had a hard time getting 8-10 sessions a day until I figured that out.
