Baby lead weaning.

i should probably  just buy the book, but with the wealth of knowledge here, I thought I would just ask.
My DS will  be 6 months old next week and we want to try the BLW thing.  Am I suppose to still try one veggie at a time a week apart to watch for allergies or do I just go full shebang and give him a smorgusborg of cooked foods for him to try??

I've introduced 2-3 foods a week. We started with sweet potato, broccoli and pork. We've been doing it for a month now. She eats baby carrots, toast fingers with hummus, green beans, turkey burger patty, oatmeal with fruits - kiwi, mango, banana, apple, pear, pumpkin, etc.

Eta. I would buy the cookbook. They have the abbreviated version with safety tips which you should read before trying BLW.

  • Although there is a wealth of knowledge here, please do some research before starting and don't just dive in uninformed. Either the cookbook or the actual book itself have a lot of information and tips.

There is a companion website but it's worth reading one of the books, as mentioned. Generally, with BLW, baby eats what the family eats.

  • I have the book and read the book, then decided to take my pediatrician's advice and not do BLW. Definitely read the book, though, if you're going to do it. It's simple, but you should know the details so it's safe for your baby. I got the book used for just a couple of bucks. Maybe try a used bookstore? Or buy a used one one Amazon?

Just curious, what was your pedi's concern with BLW?
My pedi (who I believe is somewhat uninformed) was very worried about the choking hazard. I let her say her peace and have been doing what I want in terms of feeding. We started with some purées but she has seemed more interested in feeding herself so we have turned more towards BLW. I agree with PP that if you are going to try it read at least the cookbook ahead of time, it explains a lot.
  • Many pedis will express concern about choking. They have to account for idiots. Some people will leave baby unattended while they eat and when baby chokes the parents say well doc told me to do this and now the dr is in trouble. It's mainly a CYA kinda thing. I will just let my pedi believe we are doing purées and go about our business. We plan to do a mix anyhow.

Choking. Honestly, though, my husband was concerned about choking from the get go with BLW, so when the pedi mentioned it it made DH even more apprehensive about it. We talked about it and decided that we would do purées instead. DS is happy and loving the purées and DH isn't so nervous about meal times anymore. It was the best decision for our family and our baby.
The BLW book says purée babies are more likely to choke since they aren't used to being in control of what's in their mouths. Gagging and choking are different. Then again DD has had no food yet but we are planning on BLW. We'll see.

  • I got the book from the library, if that helps. But if you really want to do it, read the book. I read it, and we're doing baby self feeding (offering what we are having for dinner, it some form if it), but I don't think we're going to go all in on BLW. He doesn't seem interested enough in food to start spoon feeding meals daily. Our plan is to follow Health Canada's guidelines, which are similar to the BLW book, but include some spoon feeding of many textures of foods (basically skipping true purees and instead just hand mashing things).

I was actually kind if disappointed in the BLW book. It's presented very matter-of-fact but there is less than a full page of references for the whole book. A lot of opinion about how babies est is stated as fact. IMO.

  • I agree that there is a definite difference between gagging and choking, and baby girl has gagged several times eating purees and only once or twice eating solids. She has never choked.

I haven't read the book yet but baby girl does so well with chewing and doesn't seem as interested in purees. I just try to use common sense when choosing and preparing food to give her for either guided or self feeding.

It's scary to give solid food, but it's an important skill and I'm so proud of baby girl for learning it. I see the value in skipping purees because instead of teaching her to swallow food as soon as it's in her mouth (which she already knows from nursing), she learns to chew it and taste it and feel it with her tongue before swallowing.

  • Oh, I should add, LO is just 6 months this week, so we just started this weekend. He has gagged a few times, and did a great job of getting what was in his mouth back out. He was close the choking at lunch today because he got some toast with hummus very mushy and it was pretty far back in his throat (I think he forgot it was in his mouth because it was so mushy). He still got it out though, and didn't even seem fazed by it.

I'm supposed to be relaxed and happy at all times?! I'm definitely doing this parenting thing wrong.

I was pleasantly surprised that our ped is fine with BLW. She basically said, there's no one path to introducing solids so decide what works for you - and no honey.

Baby is currently happily munching on some oatmeal & shredded apple "fingers." I feel pretty relaxed and reasonably happy at the moment, phew.

Well obviously you won't be happy and relaxed at all times (like when your toddler decides to dump his medicine on the dog's head and then steal the baby's bottle) but my point was there was no point in putting unnecessary stress on a parent over something as silly as purée vs BLW. If the parents are more comfortable with purées then there is no shame in that.
