Breast feeding Mommas-Pacifier Yay or Nay?

LO is only 4 days old and all LC and classes say don't introduce a pacifier until 6 weeks to avoid nipple confusion.

I feel like I've heard a lot of women say they've used a pacifier with no problems. I'm tempted to try one to help with her soothing herself to sleep, but also afraid to mess up our BF routine.

So..did you use a paci while breast feeding, and if so, when did you start?

Re: Breast feeding Mommas-Pacifier Yay or Nay?

  • My LO is 10 days old and I'm BFing we tried to introduce a pacifier last night to help him with self soothing. He wouldn't take it. I think it's a process to introduce it. Also he is really good at eating so I'm not too worried about nipple confusion

I'm a FTM with an inside baby still. So I have no insight. But there was a thread yesterday with tons of great responses - I can't link on mobile but I think it's at the top of page 2!! I'm sure you'll get more great responses here but I don't want you to miss the ones in that thread. :)

Eta: I hope you don't think I was trying to be rude directing you somewhere else. I just know you were obviously busy yesterday with a newborn and didn't get to see the thread.

  • I've been doing pacifiers since night 2, which is the same as dd. They have had no issues with bf.

  • Paci since day 2. I am certain that my nipples would have fallen off by now if not.
  • YAY YAY YAY.... she's a sucker, if we didn't use a pacifier we would never make it through changes

  • DD was a NICU baby and was given one there. We weren't allowed to hold or attempt breastfeeding till day 4 or 5 (can't remember which now). So she had a paci, would nurse and we would supplement with formula since my milk didn't fully come in. She never had any confusion between the three.

The nurses suggested giving my son a paci in the hospital because he constantly wanted to nurse. They said after 20 minutes per breast I was being used as a paci anyway...my pedi said the same thing.
