So when baby appears to "run out" at the breast/fall asleep+

do you remove baby?  This is what my baby does so I remove him, but he usually wakes up & wants to "eat" again....I had to give my boobs a break over the weekend, so I did some pumping, which was a lot of extra work, but I ended up having what felt like a blockage which was very painful..seems that ironed itself out today when I had him feed from that one.....my question is, if baby runs out & still seems hungry, what is it you do?  I was producing about 2 oz between the 2 sides this weekend at each pump session, but he could take about 3 I think.

  • First off what you get pumping is not a good indicator of what baby is getting. A baby is way more efficient than a pump. If you really want/need to know what baby is getting, have your pediatrician or an LC do a weighed feed. (Change baby's diaper. Weigh baby in just a diaper. Feed baby. Weigh baby again with the same diaper on, even if it's wet or poppy. The difference between the two weights is what baby drank.)

How old is your LO? Could he be going through the 10 day, 3 week, 6 week or three month growth spurt? You never really "run out of milk", but the flow does slow down if your boobs are getting empty. Keeping baby at the breast is the best thing to do in that case. It will tell your body that baby needs more milk.

If baby gets fussy, try switching sides more often during that time. It can trigger another letdown.

Or it could be baby just wants to comfort suck. That's pretty common in the first month or so. It could be caused by a tummy ache or getting sleepy and wanting to be near mommy.
